Charles Robert Kelley

 Charles Kelley  Charles Robert Kelley, 95, of Edina, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, May 20, 2015, at the Knox County Nursing Home in Edina, Missouri.

Charles was born on October 18, 1919, in Edina, Missouri, the son of John and Florence Mae Parcell Kelley.

He attended the Edina Elementary and High School, graduating in the Class of 1937.

On October 1942, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, in Peoria, Illinois. He served in the Army Air Force, 99th TC Squadron, based in England, and flew missions into north France, Normandy, Rhone, Rhineland and Ardennes, often airlifting wounded back to England for care. Charles received seven Bronze Stars and a Silver Star and other medals and other citations for his service.  He was discharged on October 27, 1945 from Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis, Missouri.

Charles worked most recently as a self-employed carpet layer in and around Edina. Previously he worked for several years as a meat cutter, and on a railroad and pipeline project in the past.

Charles married Erma Kathryn Marquette on May 26, 1946, in Kirksville, Missouri. They made their home in Edina, Missouri where Charles still resided. Charles was preceded in death by his wife Erma on June 23, 2000, and by his parents and a brother, John Benjamin Kelley, and a brother passed away in infancy.

Before retiring, Charles and Erma enjoyed boating on the Mississippi River and area lakes, and later they spent many week-ends in their RV. He loved working on their home, remodeling and updating the house they shared for 63 years.

Charles is survived by a daughter, Joyce Kalayeh of St. Louis, Missouri; two grandsons, Ryan L. LeDoux of San Diego, California and Azad M. Kalayeh of St. Louis, Missouri.

At his request Charles was cremated and the family will announce a memorial service in the near future at the Doss Funeral Home in Edina, Missouri.

   


Harry “Virgil” Scifres

Virgil ScifresHarry “Virgil” Scifres, age 91, of LaBelle, Missouri, passed away Monday, May 25, 2015, at Country Aire Retirement Estates in Lewistown, Missouri, surrounded by his family.  Virgil was born November 20, 1923, the son of Harry Samuel and Ora Opal Hottle Scifres in Wyaconda, Missouri.

Virgil graduated in 1941, at LaBelle High School, LaBelle, Missouri, and served his country in the United States Army during World War II from 1944 to 1946.  He was of the Methodist faith.

On April 10, 1949, Virgil united in marriage with Norma Jean Steele and she survives.  To this union seven children were born: Harry Joe (Evelyn) Scifres, Steffenville, Missouri; Dennie (Betty) Scifres LaBelle, Missouri; Jennilee Carper, LaBelle, Missouri; Audrey (Randy) Rayl Ewing, Missouri; Vancell (Sharon) Scifres Monticello, Missouri; Stacy Scifres Lewistown, Missouri, and Vonnie Stevens Steffenville, Missouri; sixteen grandchildren, twenty-five great grandchildren, two brothers-in-law, Orville (Johanna) Steele and George Steele, and one sister-in-law June (Louis) Ferguson, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Virgil retired from MFA working in Wyaconda, Canton & LaBelle.  After retirement he was assistant manager for Humphrey Feed & Seed for several years.  Virgil loved going to country music shows and watching his children participate in volleyball and other sports.

He was a caring husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.  He was very proud of his family!  He was preceded in death by his parents, sister-in-law, Calene Steele and son-in-law, Donnie Carper.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 30, 2015, at the Coder Funeral Chapel in LaBelle, Missouri.  Pastor Barb Hagerla will officiate the services.  Burial with full Military Honors will be in the New Woodville Cemetery east of Wyaconda, Missouri.

Music will be provided by Camden Scifres, vocalist, accompanied by Evelyn Scifres.  Musical selections will be Old Rugged Cross and Amazing Grace.

Casket bearers will be Phillip Scifres, Ryan Scifres, Matt Rayl, Travis Hustead, Lance Scifres and Nathan Minear.

Honorary bearers will be Chris Scifres, Paul Scifres, Jonathan Scifres, Jason Rayl, Joe Rayl, Kayla McBride, Michelle Megee, Jeannie Walter, Beth Wilke and Lucas Stevens.

Visitation will be held Friday, May 29, 2015, after 4 p.m. with family receiving friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Coder Funeral Chapel in LaBelle, Missouri.

Memorials may be made to the New Woodville Cemetery or Northeast MO Hospice.  Memorials may be left at or mailed to Coder Funeral Chapel, P.O. Box 151, LaBelle, MO 63447.

Aurolyn B. (A.B.) Turpin

Aurolyn B Turpin   Aurolyn B. (A.B.) Eskew Turpin, 91 of La Belle, died Monday, May 25, 2015 at Country Aire Retirement Estates in Lewistown, Missouri.  Born on March 30, 1924, in Knox County, Missouri, Aurolyn B. was the daughter of George and Nettie Eskew.

Aurolyn B. united in marriage with Harold D. Turpin, on June 18, 1943 in Hannibal, Missouri.  Harold preceded her in death September 5, 1996.  A.B. was a member of the Assembly of God Church in La Belle, Missouri.  She graduated from Bowls Rural School and from LaBelle High School.  She was a Gem City Business College graduate.

A.B. spent all of her life with her husband farming in the LaBelle area.  Known in the area as a great cook, she was employed at LaBelle School, Knox County Nursing Home, Parrish Place and Agnes Café.  In addition, she also worked at the Edith and Bill West Grocery Store doing general stocking and working at the meat counter.  She was a care giver to several people within their homes sitting and caring for the elderly at night time.

She was an amazing cook with an astonishing talent in making pies and homemade “noodles” – she always had a pie at Christmas time for each child, grandchild and in-laws.

Aurolyn has been a long time member of the American Legion 60+ years, the last remaining founding member of the LaBelle Saddle Club 65 years, member of the Mary Makers Club and a recent Grand Marshall of the LaBelle Harvest Fest.  She was an avid card player at different locations until recently when her eye sight has prevented leaving her home at night.  Her grandchildren and children will tell you she can still play with the best and always willing to “shoot the moon” to win.

She is survived by four of her seven children: Laura Hall of LaBelle, Roger (Joyce) Turpin, LaBelle, Roma (Mark) March, Knox City, and Barb (John) Squire of Des Moines, IA.  She has eighteen grandchildren and thirty-two great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Her parents, husband, and three sons Ronnie, Bob and Jim Turpin preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 29, 2015, in the Coder Funeral Chapel in LaBelle, MO.   Officiating the services will be Pastor Debbie Schmidt and Pastor Ted Middleton.  Music will be “Old Rugged Cross” and “One Day At A Time”.

Casket bearers will be Shane Hamlin, Ronnie Hamlin, Brian Smith, Jason Martin, Wayne Klenke,

Client Turpin, Cody Turpin, Cole Turpin and Charles Savage.

Visitation will be held after 4 p.m. with family receiving friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 28, 2015, in the Coder Funeral Chapel in LaBelle, Missouri.

Forrest Lee Hall

Forrest Hall  Forrest Lee Hall, 79, of Macon, Missouri, passed away surrounded by his family, Friday, May 22, 2015, at the Samaritan Hospital in Macon, Missouri.

Born on October 17, 1935, in Knox County, Missouri, Forrest was the son of Tom and Carrie (Mitchell) Hall.

Forrest united in marriage with his childhood sweetheart, Wanda Lee Hudson, on February 5, 1956, in Novelty, Missouri.  He grew up on a farm in Plevna, Missouri. He worked as an insurance salesman, a drywall carpenter, a miner at the Bevier Mine, owned and drove an 18 wheeler, and owned and managed a marina at Thomas Hill Lake. After retirement, he helped his wife manage the restaurant they opened together, The Apple Basket Café. Forrest enjoyed golfing, and never knew a stranger, but most of all; he loved his Lord and time spent with his family. His favorite phrase was, “I have a great family.” He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Wanda of the home; one brother, Eugene Hall (Chong Suk) of St. Louis, Missouri; one sister Jean Hawkins (Delbert) of Edina, Missouri; four children, Rick Hall (Beth) of Keytesville, Missouri, Trina Hall of Kansas City, Missouri, Merle Hall (Madeline) of Macon, Missouri, Jackie Albright (Randy) of Macon, Missouri; daughter-in-law, Ellen Walls Woodruff of Independence, Missouri; 12 grandchildren, Cory Lee Hall of Springfield, Missouri, Kimberly Kahn (Michael) of Brunswick, Missouri, Chad Hall of Columbia, Missouri, Cody Hall of Springfield, Missouri, Eric Wright (Nichole) of Kansas City, Missouri, Tyler Wright (Becca) of Kansas City, Missouri, Kasey Perry of Callao, Missouri, Kaitlyn Puskarich (Nick) of Sedalia, Missouri, Carrie Hall of Lexington, Missouri, Lindsey McWilliams (Cameron) of Warrensburg, Missouri, Nickolaus Walls of Independence, Missouri, Angelina Bottorff (Bryce) of Omaha, Nebraska; twelve  great grandchildren, and several niece, nephews, and cousins.

Gone ahead of him to meet the Lord are his daughter and son-in-law, Sandi Jean and Jeff Walls; one grandson, Jared Randall Albright; his brother and sister-in-law Carol and Karen Hall, his in-laws, Robert and Mae Hudson, and his parents.

Funeral services were Tuesday, May 26, 2015, at the Hutton & McElwain Funeral Home in Macon with Pastor Rich Wills officiating.  Burial was in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, north of Macon.  Memorials are suggested to the Open Arms Baptist Church Building Fund.

Hubert “Wayne” Harrell

Wayne HarrellHubert “Wayne” Harrell, 75, of Edina, Missouri, passed away Monday, May 25, 2015, at his son’s residence with his family by his side, near Edina, Missouri.

Wayne was born on October 25, 1939, in Arkansas, the son of Hubert and Georgia Robertson Harrell Sr.

He attended the Marquette School District in St. Louis Missouri before serving his country in the United States Marine Corp.

On June 21, 1974, in East St. Louis, Missouri, Wayne married Rosalie Patterson Ewalt.

Wayne worked construction most of his life and was a member of the Local 110 RTW Trade Workers Union. He retired in 2004 and they moved to Edina, Missouri. He was co-owner of the J&W Bikes.

Wayne enjoyed building and riding motorcycles with his friends but most of all he loved his extended family and spending time with their kids.

Wayne is survived by two sons, Fred C. and his wife Carol Ewalt of Leesburg, Florida and Tony and his wife Terry Ewalt of Edina, Missouri; six grandchildren, Nellie and her husband Jason Caldwell, Ashley and her husband Jacob Whiles, Amanda, Alanna and her husband J.R. Findling, Anna and her fiancé Sam Tannehill and Kaitlyn; ten great-grandchildren, Mitchell, Trysta, Lexi, Ali, Brentlee, Abigail, Zacharia, Noah, Wyatt and Baileigh; sisters-in-law, Vada Martin of Chariton, Iowa, Althea Patterson of Columbia, Missouri and Donna Patterson of Edina, Missouri; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

Wayne was preceded in death by his wife, Rosalie; his parents, Hubert and Georgia Harrell; a brother Charles Harrell and sisters, Nora Helen Harvey, Vivian Walker and Doris Moore.

A Memorial Service will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, May 28, 2015, at the Doss Funeral Home in Edina, Missouri, with the family greeting friends from 12:00 Noon until service time.

Military Honors will take place, after the memorial service, at the funeral home.

Mable Florea  Mable Thelma Florea (nee Binkley), age 95 of St. John, Missouri, died on Saturday, May 23, 2015. She was born on Friday, March 26, 1920 in Knox City, Missouri, the daughter of James Lloyd and Cora Russie (nee Jones) Florea.

Beloved wife for 70 years of James J. Florea; dear godmother of James Hamby; dear sister of George Robert Binkley, James Lewis Binkley, Doris Kathleen Hayes, and Velma Lucille Cone;  aunt, cousin and friend.

A graveside funeral service was held Wednesday, May 27, at Knox City Cemetery, Knox City, Missouri.

Mary C. Boltz, 94, of Hurdland, formerly of Davenport, passed away Tuesday, May 26, 2015, at Knox County Nursing Home in Edina, Missouri.  Funeral Services were held Saturday, May 30, 2015, in the Runge Mortuary Chapel.  Burial was in Davenport Memorial Park.

Mary was born December 7, 2015, in Baring, Missouri, a daughter of Charles and Lillian (King) Haffernan.  Mary united in marriage with Roy H. Boltz on February 24, 1946, in Missouri.   Roy preceded her in death in 1978.

Mary enjoyed gardening, fishing, bird watching and flowers.

She is survived by her children, Bill (Debbie) Davenport, Peggy (Harry) Boetger, and Roy (Willene) Boltz; six grandsons, one granddaughter, six great-grandchildren; a sister, Roma; and two brothers, Mike and Pat.

She was also preceded in death by her sisters, twin, Martha, and Bernel; and a brother Lawrence.

Mona Roselee “Rosie” Farris

Mona Roselee “Rosie” Farris, 70 of LaBelle, Missouri passed away on Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at the LaBelle Manor Care Center in LaBelle, Missouri.

The daughter of Kale Dwane and Dela LaVon (Lillard) Groseclose, Rosie was born on April 16, 1945 in Galveston, Texas.  On October 7, 1961 in Schuyler County, Missouri, she was united in marriage to Carl William Farris and to this union, five children were born, Corenna, Carla, Carl, Colleen and Colette.

Survivors include her children, Carla Lockwood and husband, Phillip of Baring, Missouri, Colette Merrell and husband, Steve of Canton, Missouri, Corenna Jones and husband, Troy of Brookfield, Missouri, Colleen Klingsmith and husband, Cecil of Unionville, Missouri and Carl D. Farris and wife, Lorie of Downing, Missouri; fourteen grandchildren; twenty-four great grandchildren; one brother, Stephen Groseclose and wife, Anna of Lancaster, Missouri; nieces and nephews and other family members.

Mona is preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Ward Groseclose; one sister, Patricia Wheeler; two grandsons, Lyle William Lehr and Francis “Jim” Farris, and one great grandson, Lathen Yoakum.

While living in the Lancaster area, Mona was a cook at the HiWay Inn Restaurant in Lancaster, Missouri.  She also loved to do garden work, sewing, taking care of her family and helping her parents on the farm as much as possible.

Memorial services were held on Saturday, May 30, 2015 at the Norman Funeral Home in Lancaster, Missouri, officiated by Brother Kenneth Rush, assisted by Sonny Smyser.  Special musical selections were “Paper Rosie”, “Fly” and “Something In The Water”.

Peggy Ann Sharpe

Peggy Ann Sharpe of LaBelle, Missouri, passed away Thursday, May 28, 2015, at 12:20 a.m. at Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville.

Born October 8, 1958 in Canton, Missouri, Peggy was the daughter of Jane Blakely Anderson.

Peggy was a truck driver for most of her life and she enjoyed driving across the country.  She also enjoyed remodeling.

She is survived by three sisters, Christine Fluckey, Yvonne Anderson and Kathy Sharpe; three children, Melvin Strange of Vandalia, Missouri, Billy Strange and wife, Amanda of Shelbyville, Missouri, and Amanda Schmidt and husband, Stephen of Knox City, Missouri; nine grandchildren and her beloved dog, Angel.

She was preceded in death by her mother, and one brother, Martin Spurgeon.

A small family service was held on May 31, 2015, in Knox City, Missouri.

Nancy Jo Briggs, age 72, of rural Kahoka, MO, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, June 3, 2015 in the emergency room of Fort Madison Community Hospital.
She was born July 18, 1942 in Davenport, IA, a daughter of John and Fern Essix Traeger.
On August 18, 1984 she was united in marriage to Vincent L. Briggs at the family home.
Survivors include her husband, Vincent, of the home; two step-sons, Doug Briggs of Wayland, MO and Glen (Donna) Briggs of West Burlington, IA; two step-daughters, Vickie Nolte (Charlie Weldon) of Fort Madison, IA and Laura Eagle of Indianapolis, IN; two step grandchildren, Raven Spight and Caitlyn Metsler; two step great-grandchildren; one sister, Pam Traeger (Dan Zimmerman) of Rosamond, CA; one half brother, Carl Keading of Davenport, IA; a half sister, Linda Keading of Davenport, IA; a sister-in-law, Lois McCollister of Kahoka, MO; as well as nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; step-father, Henry Keading; and sister, Cheryl England.
Nancy graduated from Davenport High School with the class of 1960. She had been employed in the Clark Co. Collectors’ office for 25 years when she retired. Following retirement, she was content to stay home, gardening, canning, tending to her flower gardens and mowing her yard. She also loved to sit and watch the humming birds at their feeders and snuggle with her pets. Friends and family were very dear to her and she enjoyed loving and caring for her husband. Everyone was welcomed into her family and she made sure they knew that they were her family. Not only was she a step-mother, but she also became a dear friend.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at 10 a.m. at Wilson Funeral Home in Kahoka with Rev. Dan Deatrick officiating. Special music was recordings “In the Garden” and “Amazing Grace”.
Pallbearers were Jack Riter, Don Clift, Mike Clark, Dale Clark, David Clark and Steve Brammer.
Burial was in the Oakwood Cemetery in Hamilton, IL.
Visitation was held at Wilson Funeral Home after 9 a.m. Monday with family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m.
Memorials were suggested to the Kahoka Senior Center.

Donald A. “Donnie” Randall, Jr., age 20, of Wayland, MO, died Thursday, June 4, 2015 in the emergency room of Henry Co. Hospital in Mt. Pleasant, IA following a two-vehicle accident.
Donnie was born July 31, 1994 at Lake St. Louis, MO the son of Donald A. and Tara Clemons Randall, Sr.
Survivors include his parents, Donald and Tara, of Wayland, MO; one son, Zander Randall of the home and his mother, Sadie Crossett of New London, IA; one brother, Dalton Randall of the home; two sisters, Katie and Delaney Randall of the home; grandparents: Roger and Ann Randall, Sr. of Kahoka, MO, and Leonard and Terry Huber of Troy, MO; great-grandmothers, Helen Matlock of Valley Park, MO and Martha Drake, of Keokuk, IA; aunts and uncles Roger (Gail) Randall, Jr., of Kahoka, MO, Doug (Pam) Randall of Sand Point, ID; Dan Clemons and John Clemons, both of Troy, MO and Melissa (Mrs. Oscar) Walton of Moscow Mills, MO; great aunts and uncles; cousins, and other relatives.

He was preceded in death his great grandparents: Bobby Matlock, Sr., Don Drake, Agnes and John E. Huber, and Marion Ziegler.
Donnie had attended Clark Co. R-1 High Schools in Kahoka. He was a previous employee of Hempens and Wagner Solutions in Keokuk. He was on his way home from his first night on a new job in Mt. Pleasant.
He enjoyed being with people and hanging out with his friends. He had a gift of making them smile and have fun. He was a huge Vikings fan. His family was very special to him and Zander was the pride and joy of his life.
A funeral service celebrating his life was held Monday, June 8, 2015 at 10 a.m. at Wilson Funeral Home in Kahoka with Pastor Don Sherwood officiating. Special music was “See You Again”, “Here We Are”, and “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”.
Honorary pallbearers were Devon Mortimer, Dylan Wright and Zane Campbell. Pallbearers were Donald Randall, Sr., Dalton Randall, Dan Clemons, John Clemons, Roger Randall, Jr. and Leonard Huber.
Burial was in the Oak Grove Cemetery, rural Hamilton, IL.
Visitation was held at Wilson Funeral Home after 10 a.m. Sunday with family receiving friends from 2-4 p.m.
Memorials were suggested to his family with checks made payable to Donald A. Randall, Sr.

Bobby Carlyle Glasgow

Bobby Glasgow  Bobby Carlyle Glasgow, 89, of Edina, Missouri, passed away Friday, June 5, 2015, at the Knox County Nursing Home in Edina, Missouri.

Born on January 17, 1926, near Rutledge, Missouri, Bobby was the son of Carl and Hallie Rector Glasgow.

He attended rural school near Rutledge, Missouri, before serving his country during World War II, in the United States Army.

In 1947, Bobby married Myrtle Virginia Knauer and to this union three children were born. Virginia preceded him in death on July 4, 1976.

After returning home from his military service, Bobby worked building the Canal near Rutledge, then farmed with his parents, while starting his family.  In 1961, he purchased Glasgow Implement, near Edina, Missouri, and serviced and sold tractors until he sold in 1978.  Bobby continued to farm and began restoring antique tractors and had accumulated 60 tractors over the years.

On April 5, 1977, Bobby united in marriage with Evelyn Jewlene Ingold Fox, in Kirksville, Missouri and they celebrated more than 38 years together.

He was a life member of the First Christian Church in Edina, Missouri, the Cyril A. Graham American Legion Post in Edina, Missouri, where he was also a life member and celebrated 60 years, and the Darrell Knauer Plevna American Legion Post.

Bobby loved his family, tractors, farming and music, and enjoyed helping others, especially children.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Glasgow of Edina, Missouri; a son, Jim and his wife Betsy Glasgow of Edina, Missouri; a daughter, Kathleen Louise and her husband, Terry Smith of De Soto, Missouri; a step-daughter, Dixie Lee Stribling of Kirksville, Missouri; six grandchildren, Mark and Kesi Glasgow, Julie and John George, T.J. Smith, Amanda Smith, Brian and Leslie Glasgow, and Cheryl and Ty Locke; five great grandchildren, Andy George, Alex George, Cody Glasgow, Seth Locke and Schyler Locke; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends and fellow tractor enthusiasts.

Bobby was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Hallie Glasgow; his wife Virginia Glasgow; a son, William Darrell “Bill” Glasgow; and a brother, Stanley Glasgow.

Funeral Services were held Tuesday, June 9, 2015, at the Doss Funeral Home in Edina, Missouri.

Military graveside honors were in the Park View Memorial Gardens in Kirksville, Missouri, by Knox County American Legion and VFW Posts.

Pastor DeWayne Wellborn officiated with Brother Bob Leckbee assisting.  Music was provided by Rita Worthington and Brent Karhoff.  Casket Bearers were Lynn Douglas, Red Calahan, Kenny Cooper, Keith Spory, Billy Mallett and Nat Harder.  Honorary Bearers were Mark Glasgow, Julie George, T.J. Smith, Amanda Smith, Brian Glasgow, Cody Glasgow, Alex George, Andy George, Mike Morford and Don Collop.

Dr Jerry Dutton Memorial services for Dr. Jerry Lee Dutton will be held on June 24th, 11:00 A.M. at Cherry Box Cemetery, Cherry Box, Missouri, with the Rev. Matthew Dutton-Gillett officiating.

Dr. Dutton passed away peacefully August 1, 2014 at NW Medical Center, Tucson, Arizona, surrounded by family who loved him.

Born October 14, 1944, in Bethel, Missouri, Jerry was the son of Dr. Howard and Lucille Dutton. Having spent the majority of his 42 year career in Flint, Michigan, Jerry retired to Cape Coral, Florida, and then to Tucson, Arizona.  Jerry graduated from the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in northeast Missouri.  He served two years as a captain during the Vietnamese War before settling his family in Michigan.

Adventurous and creative, Jerry enjoyed traveling, gourmet cooking, collecting art, and exploring different cultures.  Hobbies like scuba, snow skiing, sailing and hiking took him to remote places throughout the world.

Dr. Dutton is survived by his wife, Janet Mach Dutton, his brother, Richard Dutton, his six children: Gretchen Pai, Todd Dutton, Robin Vandenbos, Scott Barnes, Kristin Barnes, Gregory Barnes, eleven grandchildren, and one great grandchild.  Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home

Charles Kelley A memorial service for Charles R. Kelley will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 12, 2015, at the Doss Funeral Home in Edina, Missouri, with the family receiving friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time on Friday.

Charles Robert Kelley, 95, of Edina, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, May 20, 2015, at the Knox County Nursing Home in Edina, Missouri.

At his request Charles was cremated.  Military Graveside Honors, by the Knox County VFW and American Legion Posts, will be in the Mt. Salem Cemetery, west of Newark, Missouri.

An expression of sympathy in memory of Charles Kelley may be left to the Adair County Humane Society. A memorial may be left at or mailed to the Doss Funeral Home 208 N. 4th Street, Edina, Missouri 63537.

Raymond NovingerRaymond Novinger, age 92, of Shelbyville, Missouri, passed away Thursday, June 3, 2015, at Boone Hospital Center in Columbia, Missouri.

Born November 19, 1922, on a farm in Adair County, Missouri, Raymond was the son of Issac and Fannie Eitel Novinger.  On August 3, 1973, Raymond united in marriage with Aileen Smith at Kirksville, Missouri.

Raymond is survived by his wife, Aileen, three children, Michael Novinger and wife, Zaida of Shelbyville, Missouri, Todd Novinger and wife, Lorie of Mt. Home, Idaho, and Reva Novinger of Edina, Missouri; seven grandchildren, Dusten Novinger, Tenille Hart, Natoshia Rogers, Ashley Farer, Michaele Novinger, Jessica Risher and Angel Perez; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Gail Novinger and wife Mary of Kirksville, Missouri, and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Frank, Roy, Harry and Murl Novinger, and two sisters, Lela Waddil and Reta Walker.  Raymond was a graduate of Kirksville High School and was a Christian by faith.  He served his country in the United States Army during World War II.  His lifelong profession was farming.  He loved his family and especially spending time with his grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the Greening-Eagan-Hayes Funeral Home in Shelbina, Missouri, on Monday, June 8, 2015, with burial in Bethel Zion Cemetery near Bethel, Missouri.  Memorials may be made in memory of Raymond Novinger to the American Heart Association.


Julian “Dale” Lay

Dale Lay  Julian “Dale” Lay, age 90, of LaBelle, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, June 16, 2015, in Salt River Community Care in Shelbina, Missouri.  Mr. Lay was born March 19, 1925, at Monticello, Missouri, the son of Julian C. and Mattie Tompkins Lay.

Raised in rural Lewis County in a farming family during the Great Depression, Dale graduated from LaBelle High School 1944.  In addition to farming after high school, Mr. Lay was employed at a munitions plant in Ft. Madison, Iowa.

Julian Dale Lay united in marriage with his high school sweetheart, Margaret Louise Hays on December 24, 1944, at Canton, Missouri.

Upon being drafted in the United States Army in 1944, Dale volunteered for service as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division.  His training took place over the peanut fields in Ft. Benning, Georgia and Ft Polk, Louisiana.   He was stationed at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, however was not deployed overseas due to the end of World War II.

Dale resided in Lewis County where he began farming with a team of white mules. Through vision, hard work, dedication and perseverance Dale became a successful farmer.

He was an active member of the First Christian Church in LaBelle, served as LaBelle school board member and enjoyed his children’s’ extracurricular activities, especially high school sports. His beagles, Rosie and Buddy were the source of great joy in his later years.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret Louise Lay, five children, Carol Lynne Robertson of Columbia, MO, James Dale Lay and wife Susan of Blakesburg, IA, Donald Joe Lay of LaBelle, MO, Neil Grier Lay and wife Debra of LaBelle, MO, and Cheryl Louise McGowan and husband Dennis of Columbia, MO; eleven grandchildren; three step grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Roxie Clapp of Shelbina, MO and Elizabeth Shutts of Knox City, MO; one brother-in-law, Lowell Bennett of Carrollton, MO; and several nieces and nephews.  Mr. Lay was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Joe Ronald in infancy, James William and Delbert Lay; and three sisters Reba Parker, Doris Bennett, and Imogene Longwith.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M. Saturday, June 20, 2015, in the Coder Funeral Chapel in LaBelle, MO. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. on Friday, June 19, 2015, with family receiving friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Coder Funeral Chapel in LaBelle, MO.  Pastor Paul Harvey will officiate with burial in the LaBelle Cemetery. Musical selections will be “Old Rugged Cross” and “Amazing Grace”. Casket bearers will be Josh Lay, Jeffrey Lay, Michael Lay, Spencer McGowan, Connor McGowan, John Robertson, Keith Lay and Robert Lay.  Honorary bearers will be Tanya Cling, Leslie Orman, Miranda Hunter, Tara Klocke, Kimberly Hatfield, Jayme Bennett, Dawn Roberts and Candace McGowan.

Jesse Rye military

Jesse Odell Rye, 84, of Revere, MO, died Monday, June 15, 2015 at Lexington Square in Keokuk.
He was born on September 3, 1930 in Keokuk, IA, the son of Theodore and Emma Irene Wilson Rye. On June 4, 1966, Jesse was united in marriage to Norma LeMaster in Keokuk. She survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Romona Tapaska of Waterloo, IA, Cynthia Erickson of Harlan, IA, one son, Theodore Kamstra of Iowa, one step-son, Ronald Norvall of Prairie Grove, AR, five grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, five step-great-grandchildren, one brother, Robert Overturf and his wife Linda of Malcomb, IA, one sister, Judy Jonson & husband Niel of Gold Canyon, AZ, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his step-mother, Luella Rye, one step-daughter, Tina Lucas, and two brothers, Dolphin Rye and Don Martin.
Jesse was a veteran of the United States Army and proudly served his country from 1947 – 1952.
Over the years he had farmed, worked for Best Construction and was a truck driver. He retired in 1995.
He was a member of the American Legion in Kahoka, MO.
Jesse enjoyed carpentry and working on projects around his home.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Monday at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk with Pastor Shawn McAfee officiating. Burial with military rites will be in the Keokuk National Cemetery.
Visitation will be held prior to the service on Monday from 12-1 p.m. at the funeral home with family meeting with friends at that time.

Shirley Ann English, age 74, of Canton, MO, died on Tuesday, June 16, 2015 at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, IL.

Shirley was born August 13, 1940, a daughter of David and Edna McIntosh Phillips.

She was married to Lloyd English who preceded her in death.

Survivors include two sons, Doug (Michelle) English of Kahoka, MO and Elvis English (Amber Neff), of Williamstown, MO; seven grandchildren: Jared and Dylan English, and Abigail English (Nate Moore), all of Kahoka; Lyden, Matthew and Nevaeh English all of LaHarpe, IL and Aaden McDowell of Williamstown, MO; one step-granddaughter, Mariah Berry of Tyler, TX; one great-grandson, Elliott Moore of Kahoka, MO; eleven brothers and sisters: Mary Jane Page of Montrose, IA, Marilyn Garrels of Birmingham, IA, Linda (Mrs. Dan) Shirey of Canton, MO, Vickie (Mrs. Jerry) Lair of Williamstown, MO, Angie (Mrs. Rock) Schaller of Canton, MO, Yvonne (Larry) Dudgeon of Centralia, MO, David (Lora) Phillips, Jr. of Williamstown, MO, Carmon Lindsey of Canton, MO, Pam (Mrs. Randall) Briscoe of Williamstown, MO, Steve (Stephanie) Phillips of Canton, MO and Gretchen Phillips of Kahoka, MO; as well as nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers: Wayne “Jake” Murphy, Oral “Butch” Murphy and Rocky J. Phillips; two sisters, Donna Nelson and Robin Moffitt; a step-son, Bobby English; and a step-daughter, Peggy Humphrey.

Shirley spent most of her life as a housewife and babysitting for her nieces and nephews. She enjoyed making potholders for family and friends and was an avid Elvis Presley fan. She absolutely loved being with her children, her grandkids, siblings, and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were Saturday, June 20, 2015 at 2 p.m. at Wilson Funeral Home in Kahoka with Pastor Wesley Davis officiating. Special music was “Precious Lord, Take My Hand”, “Flawless”, “How Great Thou Art” and “Blue Suede .

Honorary pallbearers were David Phillips, Jr., Steve Phillips, Randall Briscoe, Danny Shirey and Dylan English. Pallbearers were Jared English, Elvis English, Nate Phillips, David Phillips, Wayne Murphy and Rock Schaller.

Burial was in Liberty Cemetery, rural Williamstown, MO.

Visitation was held Friday at Wilson Funeral Home between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Friday and after 9 a.m. on Saturday with family receiving friends Saturday from 12:30 p.m. until time of services at 2.

Leroy W. Oberholtzer

Leroy W. Oberholtzer, 76, of Memphis, Missouri, passed away Monday, June 18, 2015, at his home in Memphis, Missouri, with his family by his side.

Born on March 10, 1939, in Ephrata, Pennsylvania, Leroy was the son of Levi and Lizzie Weaver Oberholtzer.

On January 14, 1961, in Ephrata, Pennsylvania, Leroy united in marriage with Miriam S. Martin and to their union six children were born.

Leroy and Miriam left Pennsylvania for Northeast Missouri in the spring of 1975, to make their home. They purchased a dairy farm, east of Memphis, Missouri, and continued milking until his retirement in 1999, and then moved into Memphis, Missouri.

He is survived by his wife, Miriam of the home, in Memphis, Missouri; four sons, Glen and Elaine Oberholtzer, Wayne and Martha Oberholtzer, Ellis and Sharon Oberholtzer and Merle and Marilyn Oberholtzer all of Memphis, Missouri; two daughters, Wilma and Harold Horst of Baring, Missouri and Joyce and Raymond Zimmerman of Cantril, Iowa; five brothers and one sister, Paul and Mary Edna Oberholtzer of Curtiss, Wisconsin, Lloyd and Esther Oberholtzer of Richland, Pennsylvania, Irvin and Edith Oberholtzer of Rutledge, Missouri, Abner and Leora Oberholtzer of Gorin, Missouri, Amos and Alma Oberholtzer of Owen, Wisconsin, and Martin and Esther Huber of Rutledge, Missouri; forty-four grandchildren; twenty-seven great grandchildren; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

Leroy was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Anna Hoover and Grace Huber; a sister-in-law, Verna Oberholtzer and a grandchild.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, June 23, 2015, at 9:30 a.m. at the Indian Creek Mennonite Church south of Memphis, Missouri.

Visitation will be Monday, June 22, 2015, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Hillcrest Mennonite Community Center south of Memphis, Missouri.

Burial will be in the Indian Creek Mennonite Cemetery south of Memphis, Missouri.

Luke Fox, Talmon Martin, Earl Oberholtzer and Vernon Oberholtzer will officiate and Casket Bearers will be Merlin Oberholtzer, Gerald Oberholtzer, James Oberholtzer, Brandon Zimmerman, Kent Horst and Reuben Oberholtzer.

Randy Parsons

  Randy Parsons, age 59, of Shelbyville, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, June 17, 2015 as a result of an automobile accident 5 miles west of Novelty, Missouri, on route 156.

Randy was born October 6, 1955 in Hannibal, Missouri, the son of Weldon L. and Erlene Calvert Parsons.  They preceded him in death.

Randy is survived by two brothers:  Bob Parsons and wife, Meredith, of Salem, Missouri, and Ronnie Parsons of Shelbyville, Missouri; two nephews:  Tom Parsons and wife Erin of Rolla, Missouri, and Tim Parsons and  wife, Monica, of Salem, Missouri;  four great-nephews:  Tyler Ragsdale, Kody Parsons, Canon Parsons and Cole Parsons.

Randy was a graduate of North Shelby High School Class of 1973, and was a member of the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church.  He was on the cemetery board at the Bethel Zion Cemetery.  Randy was a regular at ADM at Novelty, Missouri, Belt Seed CO, Bichsel Spreading Service, and you could find him evenings at LD’s in Economy.  Randy farmed all of his life.  He loved his tractors and hunting.

Funeral services will be at 10 am Saturday, June 20, 2015, at the Greening-Eagan-Hayes Funeral Home in Shelbina, Missouri, with burial to follow at the Bethel Zion Cemetery, Bethel, Missouri.  Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 pm on Friday, June 19, 2015 from 5 to 8 pm at the Greening-Eagan-Hayes Funeral Home in Shelbina, Missouri.  Memorials may be made in memory of Randy Parsons to Bethel Zion Cemetery.
