Funeral services for Loubelle R. Davis, 89, of Memphis will be held at the Payne Funeral Chapel Saturday afternoon, March 28, 2015, at 2:00 P.M. with Pastor Paul Harvey officiating. Interment will follow in the Memphis Cemetery.

Visitation is scheduled at Paynes from 1:00 P.M. until the time of the service at 2:00 with the family present to receive friends.

Loubelle R. Davis passed away Tuesday afternoon, March 24, 2015, at the Scotland County Hospital in Memphis.

Memorials are suggested to the O. E. S. Kahoka Chapter # 40 of Wayland, MO in care of Payne Funeral Chapel, 202 E. Madison St., Memphis, MO 63555.

Donald Mallett  Donald Leonard Mallett, age 85, of Greensburg, Missouri, passed away Thursday, March 26, 2015, in the LaBelle Manor Care Center in LaBelle, Missouri.

Born April 8, 1929, in rural Scotland County, Missouri, Donald was the son of Leonard and Bessie Kenison Mallett.

Donald united in marriage with Virginia Anne Redman in Kirksville, Missouri on May 17, 1957, in a ceremony officiated by Rev. Ralph M.G. Smith.  Lois Redman and Hillis Mallett were their attendants.

Donald attended schools in the Myers Rural School in southeast Scotland County.  He served his country in the United States Army from December 2, 1952 to November 1954.  Donald was stationed in France at the same station his father served in during WW I.  He served as a tank mechanic.

A very proud farmer, Donald started farming with horses at the age of nine with his brothers Bill, Hillis and Paul in the Greensburg area.  He was very fond of John Deere tractors and prized his 4320 John Deere.

Donald was a member of the Greensburg Baptist Church.

Family was very important to Donald, especially his grandchildren.  He also enjoyed family dinners, a good cold Pepsi and a big slice of watermelon sitting under the tree with family.  He enjoyed raising strawberries and watching RFDTV.

Surviving are five children, Neal (Pam) Mallett of Baring, Missouri, Kent (Phyllis) Mallett of Memphis, Missouri, Terry Mallett of Baring, Missouri, Keith (Michelle) Mallett of Baring, Missouri, and Martha (Allen) Gudehus of Edina, Missouri, eleven grandchildren, Brad (Amy) Mallett, Nicholas Mallett, Chris (Autumn) Mallett, Leslie Mallett and Lance Horak, Brandon Gudehus, Devin Gudehus, Zach Mallett, Tyler Mallett, Madison Mallett, Kara Mallett, and Trent Mallett,  three great-grandchildren, Tagen Mallett, Kenzie Mallett and Kaleb Mallett, two step grandchildren, Drew and Staci Forquer, three step great-grandchildren, Taylor Huffman, Kailyn Jones and Brayden Tietjens, two sisters, Georganna Lister and husband Glen of Memphis, Missouri, Linda Matlick of Keokuk, Iowa, one brother Paul Mallett and wife JoAnn of Edina, Missouri, a sister-in-law Betty Mallett of Memphis, Missouri, and several nieces and nephews.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Doris Rhoades and three brothers, Bill, Hillis, and Earl Dane Mallett, one nephew Brian Mallett, two brothers-in-law Cleon Rhoades and Charles Matlick.

Funeral services will be held 10 AM Monday, March 30, 2015, in the Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home in Edina, MO.  Reverend Mike Wilson will officiate the services.  Burial with full Military honors will be in the Greensburg cemetery.  Conducted by Cyril A. Graham American Legion Post # 261 and Knox Co Memorial Post # 4822 V.F.W.   Musical selections will be Old Rugged Cross and Amazing Grace.

Casket bearers will be his grandsons, Brad Mallett, Chris Mallett, Brandon Gudehus, Zach Mallett, Nicholas Mallett, Tyler Mallett, and Trent Mallett.

Visitation will be held after 4 p.m. Sunday, March 29, 2015, with family receiving friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home in Edina, MO.

Shirlene KilldayShirlene Irene Killday 81, of Kirksville passed away Monday, March 23, 2015 at Northeast Regional Medical Center, Kirksville, Missouri.

The daughter of Marvin and Maude (Payne) Morehead, Shirlene was born January 16, 1934 in Adair County Missouri. On May 18, 1952 in Edina, Missouri she was united in marriage to Robert Killday, who survives.

Shirlene is also survived by nine children, Karen (Killday) and Dave Shelledy of Norwalk, Iowa; Teresa (Killday) and Mitch Roberts of Cameron, Missouri; Robert F. and Chris Killday of Kirksville, Missouri; Rick and Judy Killday of Villa Ridge, Missouri; Lori (Killday) and Glen Eitel of Green Castle, Missouri; Lisa (Killday) and Bob Anderson of Roswell, Georgia; Susie (Killday) and Anthony Kitchen of St. Peters, Missouri; Karla Killday of Southfield, Michigan; Kelly (Killday) and Matt Holt of Kirksville, Missouri; one daughter-in-law, Dena Killday of Avondale, Missouri; 23 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one sister, Emma Lou Hays of Kirksville, Missouri and one brother, Benny Morehead of Kirksville, Missouri.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Michael Killday; one brother, Bill Morehead; one brother in-law and one sister in-law.

Shirlene spent her early years in Gibbs, Missouri, moving to Brashear, Missouri where she attended school, graduating from the Brashear High School with the Class of 1951. After her marriage, she lived in Edina, LaBelle, Kirksville, LaGrange, before returning back to Kirksville in 1970. She was employed at Grim-Smith Hospital before she became a housewife and mother, which she was doing most of her life.

Shirlene was a dedicated mother, hard worker and an excellent cook who was very proud of her family and excited to become a grandmother and great grandmother.  She was known for her feisty and spunky personality and will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

She was a member of the Mary Immaculate Catholic Church in Kirksville, El Kadir Shrine Club Jewels and Women of the Moose.

Visitation with a prayer service at with the family was Thursday, March 26, 2015 at the Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home.

Prior to Mass of Christian Burial there was a brief visitation with Mass held on Friday, March 27, 2015, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Edina, Missouri, with Father Chris Cordes officiating. Burial was in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Edina, Missouri.

Pallbearers were grandsons: Brian Roberts, Matt Killday, Robert Killday, Kyle Eitel, Ian Anderson and Joey Thomas. Honorary bearers were: Michael Shelledy, Andrew Roberts, Tyler Roberts, Eric Killday, Aaron Killday, Ethan Eitel, Chris Eitel, Nathan Thomas and Gabe Thomas.

Memorials are suggested to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital and can be left at or sent to the funeral home, Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home, 2100 East Shepard Avenue, Kirksville, Missouri, 63501.

Julia C. Buschling, age 58, of rural Canton, MO, passed away on Friday morning, March 27, 2015 following a battle with cancer, at her home lovingly in the care of her family.

Julie was born July 26, 1956 in Keokuk, IA, a daughter of Frank and Bertie Powers Rose.

On March 6, 1976, she was united in marriage to Steven Buschling in Keokuk.

Survivors include her husband, Steven, of the home; two children: Heather (Mrs. Jeff) Brand of Sahuarita, AZ and Joshua Buschling and his fiancé, Megan Boddeker of Keokuk, IA; five grandchildren: Isabel and Annette Brand and Gabrielle, Madison and Jaxon Buschling;
two brothers: Gary (Claudia) Rose of Keokuk, IA, and Jay Rose of Burleson, TX; two sisters,
Diana Miler of Chariton, IA and Cheryl (Mrs. George) Harrison of Argyle, IA; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law: William Buschling of Kansas City, MO and Michelle and Garyl Meinhardt of Kahoka, MO; as well as nieces, nephews, cousins and other relaties.

She was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Bertie; her in-laws, Allen and Nettie Buschling; one brother, Dennis Rose; and brother-in-law, Bill Miler.

Julie was a 1974 graduate of Keokuk High School and attended Southeast Iowa Community College in Keokuk. She was a former employee of Clark County, MO, working in the Sheriff’s Department and serving as Clark County Treasurer. She also worked a number of years for Logsdon Elevator. Since 1999, she had been employed at Allied Blending in Keokuk. She loved to work and to help people in whatever capacity she could.

Julie was a member of the First Christian Church in Keokuk. She loved volunteering at the church preschool and being around children. She also loved to be around people and greet them with her contagious smile. She especially loved zumba with her friends. She also enjoyed crocheting and making blankets for her grandchildren.

Julie’s first love was her family. She was devoted to her grandchildren and it was her joy to spend time at their school activities, create craft projects with them, and take them swimming and bike riding. She worked hard to show each one how much they were loved by her.

A Memorial service was held Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at 4 p.m. at the First Christian Church in Keokuk with Pastor David Turner officiating. Visitation was held from 2-4.

Memorials in lieu of flowers are suggested to the family or “Russell and Ann Gerdin American Cancer Society Hope Lodge, Iowa City”.

The family was assisted by Wilson Funeral Home.

Casey DavisCasey Lee Davis, 25, of Independence, MO passed away, Sunday, March 29, 2015.

Born January 26, 1990 in Blue Springs, Missouri, Casey was the son of Steve and Janie Davis.

He graduated from Blue Springs High School in 2008 and later from Truman State in 2012 with a bachelors in Ag Business and was active in the Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity, Beta Iota Chapter.  He worked for IATSE Local #31 stagehands, the family owned Kettle Corn business, Action Mailing and was a part-time farmer.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, playing guitar, and was known for his sense of humor.

Casey was a member of Sycamore Hills Baptist Church.

Survivors include his parents, Steve and Janie Davis of the home; a sister, Stephanie Bolton and husband Jason and their children, Joel Bolton, Molly Bolton, Quincy Bolton and Amelia Bolton; grandparents, Charles and Paula Rouner of Webb City, Missouri, and several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Virgil and Norma Jo Davis of Knox City, MO.

William Glen Sharpe

William Glen Sharpe, age 83, of Macon, Missouri, formerly of Clarence, Edina and Baring, MO, passed away Saturday, March 28, 2015, in Loch Haven Nursing Home in Macon, MO.

Born June 29, 1931, at Hunnewell, MO, Glen was the son of William F. and Ethel R. Ragar Sharpe.

He is survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.  Mr. Sharpe was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers Francis Eugene and Lewis Hunter Sharpe.

Glen served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1952 to 1965.   He was a self-employed truck driver for many years.  He was raised in Hunnewell, Missouri, and had also lived in LaBelle, Baring, Edina and Clarence, Missouri.  He was a member of the LaBelle Christian Church.

Mr. Sharpe will be cremated.  Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, April 4, 2015, at the Coder Funeral Chapel in LaBelle, MO.  Pastor Charles Sharpe will officiate the services.  Music will be provided by Nina McKenzie, Jake McKenzie and Tamara Toliver. Musical selections will be “In The Garden” and “Beyond The Sunset”.

Burial will be at a later date in the LaBelle Cemetery.

Helen PiltzHelen Lorraine (Shahan) Piltz, 85, of Tucson, Arizona died February 12, 2015.

Born in Locust Hill, Missouri, on August 9, 1929, Helen was the daughter of Robert and Mildred Shahan.

Surviving are sons, David (Mary Kay) Piltz of Spring Lake, Minnesota and Anthony (Traci) Piltz of Billings, Montana, a daughter Jana (William, Jr.) Neathery of St. Davis, Arizona; four granddaughters; one step-grandson; three great granddaughters; and siblings, Kathleen Field of Kirksville, Missouri, Lee Anna Stokes of Decatur, Georgia; Mary Jane Brue of Hurdland, Missouri; and Robert William Shahan of Morton, Illinois; Timothy Shahan of Hurdland, Missouri; and Alice Grondin of East Sandwich, Ma.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Robert Joe Piltz and son Jeffrey Steven Piltz.

Funeral services were held February 21, 2015, at Paradise Memorial Gardens in Tucson, Arizona.

Eugene J. Croarkin, Sr.  Eugene J. Croarkin, Sr., of Kirksville, Macon and Edina, Missouri, left this world at 94 years of age, on March 31, 2015. He was born February 25, 1921, in Fort Worth, Texas, the son of Ralph and Ruth (Wright) Croarkin. At the age of 5 by court decree he was given to Aunt Emma Corine Croarkin, who lovingly raised him as her own “Buddy Boy” and remained under her care through 9 years of school at the Immaculate Catholic School in Macon, through his graduation from Macon High School, in 1939.

On May 3, 1942 he was united in marriage with Peggy Ficken at the Immaculate Conception Church in Macon and she preceded him in death after 54 years of marriage.

His life was mixed with a variety of happenings. At age 15, he rode his bicycle from Macon to Chicago by himself to visit his mother, wearing the seat of his pants out by the time of his arrival. He attended Wright Junior College in Chicago for 1 year, worked for the Western Union as a messenger in Chicago, and later worked as an accountant for the Jewel Food stores in Chicago. He entered the armed service in World War II where he spent one year in the states training, one year in the country of Wales, and one year in the five campaigns of Rhineland, Central Europe, Ardennes, Northern France, and Normandy. He served as the rank of sergeant in the 28th Infantry Division receiving five gold stars for his five major campaigns and a combat infantry badge. Eugene received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Education at Northeast Missouri Teachers College in 1949, using the help of the WW II GI Bill; he also received his Master’s degree in Business. This started his 50 year teaching career of one year at Sturgeon Missouri High School, two years at Bluffs Illinois High School, one year in the city of St. Louis High School, 32 years as an instructor and professor of accounting, assistant, and associate professor at Northeast Missouri State University, one year at Indian Hills Community College, and 13 years at Buena Vista University as the instructor at the Ottumwa campus. He was known for his knack of never forgetting a student’s name after he learned it the first day of class.

Throughout his teaching career he attended UCLA in Los Angeles and University of Missouri at Columbia during summer sessions to keep updated in changes taking place in the business world. His favorite business discipline was tax; over the years he prepared many tax returns for people in the community, mainly to enhance his teaching tax accounting, which he taught many times at the university level. He was known for his love of big band music, coffee, and a good tax return; he always said it was like solving a puzzle.

To many people he was known as Grandpa Corky. His house was grand central station, with an open door policy, where he acquired many honorary family members over the years. From teaching the art of paper air plane making to going in circles on the merry-go-round, he played a pivotal part in every child’s life he came in contact with. He was also a regular at Leo’s Roller rink, skating frontwards, backwards, and doing the hokey-pokey, where he turned himself around. Eugene was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Margaret “Peggy” Ficken Croarkin, beloved Aunt Emma “Corine” Croarkin, mother Ruth Wright Croarkin Chirinos Miller, father Ralph Croarkin, and sister-in-law Shirley Ficken.

He is survived by “his girl” Virginia Hudson of Macon, Missouri; half-siblings Mary Croarkin Harris of Kansas City, Missouri, and Charles Croarkin of Sedalia area; brother-in-law Homer Ficken of Fort Worth, Texas; and his cousin Sue Gibilterra, as well as several nieces.

He is survived by six children, sixteen grandchildren, thirty-one great-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren on the way, and one great-great grandchild. His children and spouses are Eugene J. Croarkin, Jr and Karen (Hunsaker) of Kirksville, MO, Janet (Croarkin) Tollenaar and friend Jeff Hawkins of Kirksville, MO , John and Mindy (Canadeo) of St. Paul/Minneapolis, MN, Judy (Croarkin) and Robert Patterson of Quincy, IL, Joyce (Croarkin) and Lavern Schmitz of Kirksville, MO, and Jeanne (Croarkin) and Freddie Bailey of Edina, MO.

His sixteen grandchildren are Dr. Paul Croarkin and Wife Mony of Rochester, MN; Mark Croarkin and wife Tricia of St. Louis, MO; Dr. Jeffrey Croarkin and wife Katy of El Paso, TX; Julie Valdivia and husband Mike of Kansas City, MO; Jessica Lenihan and husband Danny of Kansas city, Missouri; Sarah Ozias and Husband Pete of Columbia, MO; Oona Vedder and husband Tim of Minneapolis, MN; Mora Slifka and husband Neal of Minneapolis, MN; Jason Patterson of Quincy Illinois; Samantha Patterson of Quincy, IL; Jennie Bell and husband Devon of St. Charles, MO; Jill Briddle and husband Brady of Kirksville, MO; Maggie Jarvis and husband Danny of St. Charles, MO; Lindsay Leckbee and husband Randy of Kirksville, MO; Katie Dixson and husband Bryce of Edina, MO; and Shelby Bailey of Edina, Missouri.

His thirty-one great grandchildren are Kyle Croarkin, Morgan Croarkin, Lydia Nance, Kegan Nance, Logan Croarkin, Eli Croarkin, Matasen Chambers, Lake Gott, Clete Gott, Olly Ozias, Ella Ozias, Miles Vedder, Evie Vedder, Sydney Slifka, August Vincent Slifka, Jack Valdivia, Josephine Valdivia, Benjamin Valdivia, Rose Lenihan, Grace Lenihan, Danielle Lenihan, Sullivan Lenihan, Zachary Patterson, Haley Patterson, Grace Patterson, Tori Patterson, Tulianne Briddle, Tallulah Briddle, Lila Jarvis, Ivy Leckbee, and Macy Dixson. His great-great grandchild is Elliot Cover.

Rite of Christian burial will held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 4, 2015, at Mary Immaculate Catholic Church in Kirksville, MO.  Father Chris Cordes will officiate the services.  Burial with full military honors will be in the Mary Immaculate Catholic Cemetery.

Eugene selected musical pieces to be performed: Ave Maria, “I’ll Be Seeing You” performed by Suzanne Howerton, and a musical piece played on the flute by John Croarkin.

Casket bearers will be Dr. Paul Croarkin, Mark Croarkin, Dr. Jeffrey Croarkin, Jason Patterson, Randy Leckbee, and Bryce Dixson.

Honorary bearers will Jim Edwards, Freddie Bailey, Lavern Schmitz, Robert Patterson, Jeff Hawkins, Gary Hudson, Paulie Schmitz, and Bill Minor.

Visitation will be held after 4 p.m. Friday April 3, 2015, in the Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home in Kirksville, MO with family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

A Prayer Service will be held the night of the visitation at 6:00 p.m.


Sherry Lee (Mauck) Goudschaal

Sherry Goudschaal Sherry Lee (Mauck) Goudschaal, age 77, of rural Clayton, Illinois passed away at 5:00 a.m. Thursday, April 2, 2015 at Golden Good Shepherd Home in Golden, Illinois.

Born August 5, 1937 in Kirksville, Missouri, Sherry was the daughter of Robert and Lelah Davis Mauck and grew up on their family farm near Knox City, Missouri.  Sherry united in marriage with Glenn Eugene Goudschaal on February 28, 1964, in Quincy, Illinois.  Glenn preceded her in death on November 19, 2011.

Mrs. Goudschaal was a very dedicated, loyal and hardworking employee for the Golden Good Shepherd in Golden, Illinois for 27 years, retiring in January of 2014 due to her illness.  Sherry felt she was very blessed with the opportunity of the many acquaintances, visiting with the residents and numerous long lasting friendships that she made while working at the home.  She very recently quoted to her family “it was an honor to work and serve the community through the Golden Good Shepherd Home”.  Mrs. Goudschaal was also a homemaker and assisted her husband with the operation of the family farm.  Earlier in life she worked as a secretary for Moorman Manufacturing in Quincy, where she enjoyed being a member of the company’s bowling league and has also worked for Doris Lehne Tax and Accounting in Mt. Sterling.

She attended Knox City Grade school and graduated from Knox City High School.  Sherry also attended North East Missouri State Teacher’s College in Kirksville.

Mrs. Goudschaal was a devoted member of the Poe Baptist Church in Brown County having served the church in many capacities.  Earlier in life, she attended and was baptized through the Knox City Christian Church.

Sherry was a member of the Pea Ridge Home Extension and served as Pea Ridge Township Clerk.   Her many friends knew her as a patriot and an avid republican party supporter.  She always enjoyed reading, playing the piano, traveling whenever possible, canning, gardening and she loved to cook family dinners.

A devoted and loving wife, mother, mother-in-law and grandmother, Sherry always enjoyed attending all of her children’s and granddaughter’s many activities.    One of her greatest joys was to spend time with her granddaughter’s and loved to stop in to visit with them, even if she could only stay a little while.

Survivors include three children, Glenda (Rodney) Lewis of Quincy, Illinois, Gerry Goudschaal of Clayton, Illinois and Julie (Brian) Houston of Mt. Sterling, Illinois; three granddaughters, Jessica and Shannon Lewis, both of Quincy, Illinois, and Siera Houston, of Mt. Sterling, Illinois; one brother, Bobby (Frances) Mauck of Knox City, Missouri, along with several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 7, 2015 in the Hendricker Funeral Home in Mt. Sterling with Rev. Wayne Lock and Dick Silver officiating.    Burial will be in the Knight Cemetery in Brown County.

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.   Friends may also call from 8:00 a.m. until the time of services on Tuesday.

Memorials are suggested to the Golden Good Shepherd Home, Knight Cemetery or Unity Point at Home Hospice.

Raymond Black  Raymond Arnold Black, Age 91 years & 1 month of Tempe Arizona passed away on March 30, 2015.

Born February 4, 1924 Raymond was the son of Paul and Georgia Mae Platz Black, near Brashear MO. He was united in marriage to Geneva Stanley, May 28, 1950 at Kirksville MO. They had a happy marriage for 63 years.

He is survived by his daughter, Joyce Ann Black Wood (Richard), Mesa AZ;  Son Paul James Black (Ann), Akron, OH; grandsons, Morgan R, Wood, Payson, AZ., Steven J. Black and Jonathan B. Black, Akron, OH.;   granddaughters, Georgina M. Black Kreitzburg, Akron OH, Allison S. Wood, Mesa, AZ; great granddaughters, Victoria M. Young & Hannah Beck, Akron OH, & great grandsons, Johnny E. He was preceded in death by his Parents, & brother, William “Bud” Black (Voncile) & sister, Pauline Black Mayfield.

Raymond was a 4th Generation N.E. Missourian.  He was the last surviving great grandson of John and Sarah (Taylor) Black, who moved from Kentucky to Quincy, Illinois, to Edina, Missouri in 1839.

Mr. Black attended Northeast Missouri Schools Graduating from Kahoka High School, May of 1941, He attended KSTC (Truman University), Greeley State College and Arizona State University, majoring in industrial arts.

His family owned many corner grocery stores in Northeast MO, where he learned his work ethic when he was young. In addition, he was a butcher, wood worker, a home builder and a HAM Radio operator. He worked for the Unites States Postal Service for 24 years at Mesa, AZ, retiring in March of 1984.

He was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church, Mesa, AZ.

In High School and College he played basketball, & was Captain of the Kahoka, MO basketball team. He always enjoyed baseball & he was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinal’s, Arizona Diamondbacks, & the Phoenix Suns, as well as all ASU Sports teams. Upon Graduation from High School he joined the United States Army and, as he said, “It was his High School Graduation trip.”

Mr. Black served his country in WWII with the United States Army, Signal Corps in the European Theatre with an honorable discharge January 24, 1946. He was part of Patton’s Army positioned in England Prior to D-Day it was known as Operation Fortitude which was the code name for this World War II military deception employed by the Allied nations as part of an overall deception strategy to confuse the Germans, which then evolved into Operation Quicksilver. From there his unit then went on to the European mainland to liberate the concentration camps and release the captives, and then on to Berlin. Mr. Black was awarded many medals, including Two Bronze Stars. He was a Life Time Member of both the V.F.W. and the American Legion.  He was a supporter of the Paralyzed Veterans of America. He liked his coffee, to read, to travel the US by road, to camp and fish.

Visitation will be at the Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Chapel on Thursday, April 9, 2015 at 9:30 a.m. just prior to the Funeral Service that will follow at 10:30 a.m. at the Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Chapel. Burial will be at the Brashear Cemetery, Brashear, MO.

Pallbearers will be Derek Kirkpatrick, Jeff Stanley, Jon Black, Steven Black.

Joseph Matticks   Joseph E. Matticks, 95, of Moline, passed away Sunday, April 5, 2015 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, IA.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 p.m. Thursday, April 9, 2015 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Moline. Visitation is from 4 – 7 p.m. Wednesday at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline, where a Rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, East Moline. Military Rites will be conducted by the American Legion, Post 246. Memorials may be given to Alleman Catholic High School or the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.

Joseph was born March 1, 1920 in Edina, Missouri, the son of Joseph M. & Mary N. (Bruegenhemke) Matticks. He married Pansy E. Lepper on September 18, 1943 in Hannibal, MO.  She preceded him in death on May 16, 1995.

He worked at the former John Deere Plow Planter Works, Moline, as a Press Operator for 25 years, retiring in 1985.

Joseph was a member of St. Mary’s Church, Moline and served in the Navy during WWII.

He is survived by his daughter, Ramona (Dan) Ballard, Rock Island; son, Victor L. (Barb) Brown, Jr., Rock Island; sisters, Mary M. Sohn, Quincy, Doris Scott, AZ, Jackie (Dan) Gray, Gladstone, MO, Wanda Marczak, MN; brother, Fred (Evelyn) Matticks, Quincy, IL; grandchildren, the late Victor (Colleen) Brown III, Robert (Jayne) Brown, Tracy (George) Schroeder, Brenda (Mike) Trent, Peggy (Brad) Yeager, Alaina (Jason) Mach, Abby (Bill) Pedersen and April Schroe

Eric Sweet Eric Sweet, thoughtful artist and adjunct professor at the University of Missouri, was born Sept, 15, 1970, and left us suddenly Monday, April 6, 2015.

An informal memorial was held Saturday evening, April 11, 2015 at Cosmo Park in the Lamb Shelter.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made toward The Eric Sweet Memorial scholarship Fund to support future generations of young artists who share his passion. Checks should be made payable to the MU Department of Art, with the notation “Eric Sweet Scholarship.” All donations made by check will be tax deductible.  Donations may be sent to Brenda Warren, A126 Fine Arts Building, University of Missouri Dept. He is survived by his loving wife of 16 years, Catherine Armbrust of Columbia; father, Noel Sweet of LaBelle; siblings, Ron (Ellen) Sweet and Diane Sweet, nieces and nephews, as well as other wonderful family members and friends. His wit and humor will be missed by so many.

Eric was preceded in death by a sister, Debra Sweet of Dusseldorf, Germany (formerly of LaBelle, Missouri) in 2009, mother Fay E. Sweet on August 25, 2014, a brother in infancy, Randal, and a nephew, Ryan Sweet in 2013.

Dr Charles McClain Charles J. McClain of Columbia, 83, passed away April 9, 2015 at home.
A celebration of the life of Charles McClain was held at April 16, 2015 at the Missouri United Methodist Church located at 204 S. 9th Street Columbia, MO 65201.
Born on September 1, 1931 in Iron County, Missouri, Charles was a son of John and Hazel McClain. He married Ann Kettering Covington in 1995. She survives.
A teacher, a professor, and a university president, Dr. McClain was passionate about education. He exercised his commitment to education in many venues, always focusing on exceptional student learning and growth. He benefited thousands of students from all walks of life and removed obstacles for them. Dr. McClain served in public and private schools in rural and urban settings. He founded Jefferson College in 1963 and was President there. He was the Commissioner of Higher Education for the State of Missouri. The U.S. District Court appointed him as the Desegregation Monitor for the Kansas City School District. He traveled to his wife’s hometown to be Interim President at Fairmont State University in West Virginia. His proudest professional achievement, however, was his service for twenty years as President of Northeast Missouri State University (Truman State University) where he conceived and led the transformation of the institution from a teachers’ college to the state’s premier highly selective liberal arts and sciences university. He received bountiful awards and honors and authored numerous publications about education issues. He loved the concept of excellence and making things better. Many called him an icon of education.
Charles was dedicated to his community. He was a leader in his church and in all of the organizations he served including the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. He was a great friend and mentor to all lucky enough to know him. He was generous with the twinkle in his eye, his smiles, and caring kind words.
Dr. McClain cared greatly for others. He coveted time with his family. In addition to Ann, Charles is survived by his two daughters and their husbands, Anita and Lewis Kinkeade and Melanie and Bruce Brown. He is also survived by his stepchildren Elizabeth and Paul and Paul’s wife, Megan. His four grandchildren and two step grandchildren also survive him: Gregory; Kate and her husband Chris; Bryan; Christopher; Ashley; and Devin. His three great grandchildren Genevieve Grace, Sophia Nicole, and Christian McClain were special delights to him.

Jane Ann Randall Jane Ann Randall, 67, of Newark, Missouri, passed away at 11:45 AM Thursday, April 16, 2015.
Mrs. Randall was born March 20, 1948, in Burlington, Iowa to Loren Victor and Shirley Powers Petersen.
She was married to Glenn L. Randall, Sr. on June 22, 1965 in Monroe City, MO. He preceded her in death January 25, 2015.
Survivors include four children, Tammy Ahten (Jerry), Donna Wolfe (Bill), and Glenn Randall, Jr. (Michelle), all of Newark, MO, Sandra Schol of Peoria, Missouri; one brother, Robert Petersen (Helen) of Newark, Missouri; one sister in law, Imogene Clayton, of Newark, Missouri; several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three children; Ronald Randall, Ginny Miles and William Randall.
Mrs. Randall was a homemaker, enjoyed gardening, and listening to music, especially Christie Lane Gospel Music.  Mrs. Randall loved attending family gatherings and taking care of her husband and her kids. She was a Baptist by faith.

There was a family gathering Sunday, April 19, 2015 at the Newark Town Hall in Newark, MO.
Arrangements for cremation are under direction of the James O’Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal, MO.
There are no services planned at this time. Burial will be at a later date at Mt. Pisgah in Bowling Green, MO.

Thomas McEvoyThomas Joseph McEvoy, age 62, of Edina, MO, passed away Saturday, April 18, 2015, in Columbia, MO.

Born March 19, 1953, in Adair County, MO, Thomas was the son of Glennon Vincent and Mary Jane Berberet McEvoy.

Tom is survived by two sisters Donna Fortenberry and husband Randy of Kirksville, Missouri, and Debbie Gooden and husband Darrell of Lancaster, Missouri, one brother James E. McEvoy of Edina, Missouri, nieces and nephews, Steven, Lori, Brian, Bradley, Nathan, Tyler, Cody and Todd Fortenberry, Mindy Roberts and Melissa Huggins, several great nieces and nephews and one aunt Ruth Ann Berberet of Edina, Missouri.  Tom was preceded in death by his parents Glennon and Mary Jane McEvoy.

Tom received his education at St. Joseph Catholic School and graduated from Knox County High School Class of 1971.  He was engaged in farming northeast of Edina, MO.  He had also worked for several years at Wal-Mart and Florsheim Shoe Factory in Kirksville, MO.

Tom was a Yankees and Elvis fan and enjoyed visiting with people.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 A.M. Wednesday, April 22, 2015, in the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Edina, MO.  Father Joseph Hoi will officiate the services.  Burial will be in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

Music will be provided by Nancy Reardon, organist and Lisa Bowen, soloist.

Casket bearers will be Jack Reardon, Mitchell Penn, John Pinson, Jim Glasgow, Gary Yoakum and Steve Miller.

Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, 2015, with a Prayer service to be held at 7 p.m. in the Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home, Edina, MO.

Margie Sue Ewart, age 66, of Wapello, died Thursday afternoon, April 16, 2015, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Margie was born on August 2, 1948 in Keokuk to her biological parents Henry Beck and Penny Brillon. She was adopted and raised by Royal and Iola Weller. Margie married Dan Ewart on May 30, 1964 in Kahoka, Missouri.

She attended Kahoka High School and later received her GED. Margie was a homemaker and had worked as a nurse aide for the Clark County Nursing Home in Kahoka, worked as a clerk at P & P in Wapello and as a teacher’s aide at the Morning Sun School. During their fifteen years in Washington, Indiana, she worked as a veterinarian assistant.

She enjoyed going to the river and loved raising her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed caring for any wildlife that was in need. Margie loved traveling especially to Florida.

Her family includes her husband, Dan; a daughter, Michelle & Gary Dickey of Wapello; two sons, Dan & Jennifer Ewart of Wapello and Bill Ewart at home; six grandchildren; her biological stepmom, Alice Beck of Independence, Kansas; and siblings, Alice Seifert, Louis Littlepage, and Ginny Davis all of Independence, Kansas, Kenny Weller and Hank Beck both of Hamilton, Illinois, and Marvin of Independence, Kansas. She was preceded in death by her biological parents; adoptive parents; a daughter, Cathy Shadle; a son, Curtis Ewart; a brother, Richard Weller; and a sister, Shirley Mason.

Following cremation a visitation with the family meeting friends will be held from 5:30 to 7:00 PM on Monday, April 20, 2015 at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello. The visitation will be followed by a funeral service at 7:00 PM with Rev. Jon Evans officiating. Her cremated remains will be placed at the Elmwood Cemetery at a later date.

A Memorial Fund has been established for the benefit of the Wapello Community Ambulance Service and the Wapello Rescue Unit.

Marjorie Ann Summers, age 85, of Kahoka, MO, died peacefully on Monday, April 13, 2015 at the Clark Co. Nursing Home in Kahoka where she had been a resident the past three months.

Marge was born October 18, 1929, in Hannibal, MO, the daughter of Loran and Florence Stieghorst Smith.

She married Hugh L. Summers on July 24, 1954 at the First Christian Church in Hannibal, MO. Hugh was serving in the U.S. Air Force when they married so they lived in Marietta, GA until he was discharged. During that period she taught high school in Marietta until the end of December, 1954, when Hugh received his discharge. They moved to Kahoka in August of 1957.

Survivors include her husband, Hugh of the home; three sons: Hugh Scott (Jan) Summers and Steven F. (Lynn) Summers, of Kahoka, MO and Gregory K. (Teri) Summers of Buford, GA; three grandsons, Zachary Summers serving in the U.S. Marines on the island of Oahu, Alex Summers of Cedar Rapids, IA, and Collin Summers of Washington, IA; one granddaughter, Stephanie (Mrs. David) Little of Wilton, IA; one brother, Dane (Nikki) Smith of Dubuque, IA; two sisters-in-law, Sarah Summers of Cordele, GA and Jo Summers of Madison, GA; her “Eder family”; as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers-in-law, Oscar and Marvin Summers.

Marge graduated from Hannibal High School with the class of 1947 and from Northeast Missouri State Teacher’s College in May of 1951 with a B.S. Degree in Business Education. She received her Master of Arts Degree from Kirksville in August of 1952. She was Valedictorian of both her High School and College senior classes.

In college, Marge was a member of Cardinal Key, Pi Omega Pi, Phi Kappa Epsilon, and Sigma Sigma Sigma social sorority. She taught school at Roosevelt High School in St. Louis, MO prior to her marriage. She taught Vocational Business Education subjects for 32 years at Clark County until retiring in 1995. She had substitute taught until three years ago.

She was a charter member of the Beta Psi Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma, and of the Tuesday Club. She had served several times as president of the Clark County Chapter of the American Cancer Society. She served as a member of the Board of the American Cancer Society representing the Northeast Area in Jefferson City. She also served as a member of the Library Board as well as secretary of the Clark County Local Cancer Fund since its formation. She was also a member of CTA and MSTA. She was a former president of the Vocational Business Education Teachers of NE Missouri.

Marge was a member of the Kahoka Christian Church since moving to Kahoka in 1957. She was a faithful member, serving as a Sunday School teacher and as elder of the church.

After retiring, she and Hugh traveled and visited all 50 states. Some of her greatest memories were taking all four grandchildren on trips during the summers. The past six years she and Hugh spent the four winters months in Tavares, FL, where they made many friends. She will be missed by all of her family, students, and many friends.

Funeral services were held Monday, April 20, 2015 at 10 a.m. at the Kahoka Christian Church with Rev. Jim Campbell officiating. Kathy Campbell was organist and Lee Ellen Shultz, pianist. Special music “His Eye is on the Sparrow” was by Dan McAfee with “The Lord’s Prayer” and “Amazing Grace” recorded by the late Mathew Eder. Congregational hymn was “May the Lord, Mighty God”.

Pallbearers were Zachary Summers, Alex Summers, Collin Summers, David Little, David Wilson and Adam Frazee.

Burial was in the Keokuk National Cemetery.

Visitation was held after 10 a.m. Sunday at Wilson Funeral Home in Kahoka with family receiving friends from 3-5 p.m.

Lyle E. Davis, age 64, of Kahoka, MO, died Saturday, April 11, 2015 at his home.

Lyle was born December 11, 1950 at Kirksville, MO, a son of Lowell and Loubelle Drake Davis.

He attended grade school at Granger and graduated from Wyaconda High School. He later graduated from technical/mechanical school at Palmyra.

On December 11, 1970, he was united in marriage to Wanda R. Young at the First Baptist Church in Kahoka.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda, of the home; one son, James E. Davis of the home; one daughter, Melissa A. (Randy) Foss of San Diego, CA; grand puppy, Toby; three sisters:
Bonnie Brotherton of Medill, MO, Lisa (Joe) Humes of Wyaconda, MO and Rita (Chuck) Little of Warsaw, IL; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Joe (Betty) Young of Kahoka, MO, Alvin (Marilyn) Young of Montrose, IA, Larry (Joyce) Young , Jeanette (Wayne) Zinnert, Leona F. Young, and Vera (Ernie) Morris all of Kahoka, MO; as well as nieces, nephews and their families, cousins, and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers-in-law, J. C. Brotherton and Dennis York; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Joseph “Skeet” and Ava Barwick Young, and grandpuppy, Gizmo.

Lyle was a hard worker all of his life. In earlier years, he worked for Ralph Plenge, Sr. on his farm and at his feed store. He then worked for Sherwood and Sons, St. Louis Diecast in Keokuk, and part-time for Kaiser Quarry and then MFA, both of Kahoka. He also raised cattle and hogs.

Lyle had a talent of creating things out of anything, or as James said “as a
“shade tree inventor”. He had restored two trucks from four old ones that he was very proud of.

Lyle was a member of the South Wyaconda Baptist Church. He and Wanda loved to go dancing on weekends and visit with the friends they made there. He became interested in photographing the wildlife around him, including deer and wild cats, many from his front door. He was an excellent euchre player and recently had began playing at the senior center in Kahoka on Wednesday evenings. He was a faithful blood donor for the Red Cross and was one pint short of twelve gallons. He passed away at his farm while working hard as he always did.

Funeral services were held Thursday, April 16, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. at Wilson Funeral Home in Kahoka with Rev. Jim Campbell officiating. Special music was “He Touched Me” by the Isaacs, “Homesick” by Mercy Me, and “Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes” by George Jones.

Honorary pallbearers were James Davis, Melissa and Randy Foss, Eric Young, Chris Young, Leona Young and Gene Bair.

Pallbearers were Andrew Humes, Christopher Humes, Charlie Little, Wayne Zinnert, Bronson Worrell and Robert Webster.

Burial was in the Kahoka Cemetery.

Visitation was held at Wilson Funeral Home after 9 a.m. Wednesday with family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m.

Memorials were suggested to the family.

20150413144649834_0001, 65, of rural Rutledge, Missouri went home to be with her Savior Monday, April, 6, 2015, due to sudden illness. The daughter of Galen Edward and Joy Johnson Eldred, she was born October 26, 1949 at Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

The youngest of three, she grew up on on a farm southeast of Springville, Iowa and graduated from Springville High School in 1967. In 1968 she married Sherman E. Cundiff at Storm Lake, Iowa and to this union two children were born: Sharm and Shannon. Sherman preceded her in death in 1992. She later married Marv Walsh in 1993 they were blessed with a son: Joshua.

Lisa liked the simple life being outdoors living in the country with her family and was a very private person. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior at the age of 19 and she rejoiced when she seen others who seeked their salvation and were saved.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her first husband.

She is survived by her husband: Marv of the home; two sons: Joshua of Rutledge, Missouri and Sharm Cundiff of Reno, Nevada; her daughter: Shannon Cundiff of Rutledge, Missouri; two brothers: Terry Eldred of Marion, Iowa and Steve Eldred of Springville, Iowa and other relatives and friends.

Memorials in lieu of flowers are suggested to the Indian Creek Cemetery Association in care of the Payne Funeral Chapel, 202 E. Madison St., Memphis, Missouri 63555.

Private Graveside services were held Thursday morning, April 9, 2015 at the Indian Creek Cemetery with Brother Larry Smith and Brother Shay Carpenter officiating.

Arrangements were entrusted to the care of the Payne Funeral Chapel in Memphis.

Jerry D. Soper, age 54, of Keokuk, IA, passed away Wednesday, April 8, 2015 at his brother’s home at rural Kahoka, MO.

Jerry was born May 21, 1960 in Keokuk, a son of Carl V. and Lucille Renner Soper.

He is survived by three brothers, Jeff (Robin) Soper of Kahoka, Jed (Kim) Soper of Alexandria, and John Soper of Keokuk; three sisters, Evelyn Soper of Kahoka, Carla Soper (Chris Young) of Wayland and Brenda Burchett of Keokuk; brother-in-law, Todd Rockelman of Alexandria; sister-in-law, Sherry Soper of Warsaw; uncle and aunts, Kenny (Carolyn) Soper of Keokuk and Erma Hummel of Montrose; his dog, “Dottie” who was a like child to him; as well as nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, James; and sister, Mary Rockelman.

Jerry attended grade school in Alexandria and high school at Clark Co. R-1.

He was an employee of Henniges for 15 years and later of Steel Castings. He was a hard worker and very few could keep up with him even through his 10 year battle with cancer and a traumatic accident. He always said it would take more than cancer to get him down.

Jerry loved going to stock car races and working on vehicles with his brother Jeff. He was so proud of the 1941 hot rod they had restored and doing major “burn outs” at the Rust Revival in Wayland.

Jerry had the ability to make everyone smile and never was unhappy no matter what the trial. He loved family and he loved life.

A graveside Memorial Service was held Saturday, April 11, 2015 at 11 a.m. at the Kahoka Cemetery with words of comfort by Jeff Smith. Special music was “Amazing Grace”.

Visitation was held at Wilson Funeral Home in Kahoka after 9 a.m. Saturday with family receiving friends from 10 a.m. until time of services.

Memorials may be made to the family with checks made payable to Evelyn Soper.
