NELSON PARRISH

Nelson Carl Parrish, 90, of LaBelle, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, April 26, 2017, at Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville, Missouri.

He was born on October 31, 1926, in LaGrange, Missouri, the son of Carl and Maurita Goelbricht Parrish.

After his school years, he served his country in the United State Army during World War II.

Nelson worked at the Wells Lamont Glove Factory in Edina, Missouri, while there he met Laura Lee Haines. On October 6, 1950, in Edina, Missouri, they were united in marriage by the Reverend Tate and to this union two sons were born, Douglas and David.

They made their home in Edina, then in Ft. Madison and Burlington, Iowa, where Nelson worked for the Santa Fe Railroad. After living in Iowa, the couple moved to northern Illinois, first in Richmond, then to Woodstock, Illinois, eventually settling in Crystal Lake, Illinois, where they lived until their retirement and moved back to LaBelle, Missouri in 2000.

Nelson is survived by his two sons, Douglas and his wife Ginger of LaBelle, Missouri, and David of Lake In The Hills, Illinois; four grandchildren, five great grandchildren, two great-great grandchild; a brother, Lindsey Parrish of LaGrange, Missouri; three sisters, Margie Tarpein of LaGrange, Missouri, Donna and Larry Ledbetter of LaBelle, Missouri, and Freda Brooks of Texas; a sister-in-law, Pat and her husband Alva Grant of Edina, Missouri; a niece, Gretchen Parrish of Baring, Missouri; along with a host of friends.

Nelson was preceded in death by his wife, Laura Lee Parrish on October 31, 2015; his parents; and a sister, June McCabe on April 7, 2004.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 29, 2017, at the Doss Funeral Home in Edina, Missouri.

Visitation will be after 9:00 a.m. Saturday with the family receiving friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Full Military Honors will be in the Linville Cemetery in Edina, Missouri by the Knox City American Legion Post.

Reverend James Salter will officiate and Casket Bearers will be Roy Lewis, Kyle Clay, Lawrence Stutsman, Dutch Whitaker, Doug Parrish Jr., Rick Parrish and Ricky Parrish.

An expression of sympathy in memory of Nelson Parrish may be left to the Knox County Cancer Fund. A memorial may be left at or mailed to the Doss Funeral Home 208 N. 4th Street, Edina, Missouri 63537.


ASHTON JADE SCHROEDER

Ashton Jade Schroeder was stillborn on April 26, 2017 at Blessing Hospital, Quincy, IL. She weighed 6 pounds 7 ounces and was 19 inches long. Ashton was the cherished daughter of Victor and Alisha (Rees) Schroeder and beloved sister of Dylan, Preston and Reagan of Lewistown, Mo.

She is greeted in heaven by her uncle Patrick Schroeder, step-grandfather John Flynn and great-grandparents Bill and Mary Schroeder, great-grandfather Dolan Daggs, great-grandparents Melvin "Bud" and Dona Eisenberg, great-grandmother Mary "Beth" McCracken, many great aunts, uncles and cousins. She is mourned on Earth by her grandparents, Joe and Karen Schroeder of Ewing, grandmother Abbie (Eisenberg) Flynn of Maywood, grandparents Jamie and Kim Rees of Quincy, great-grandmother Mary Ann Daggs of Ewing, great-grandparents Ed and Ruby Darlene Rees of Kincaid, IL, many aunts, uncles, cousins and so many dear friends.

There are no services scheduled at this time. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Expressions of sympathy and memorials in Ashton's memory may be made to the Splash Station Swimming Pool or Highland Athletic Boosters in care of Davis Funeral Home, Canton, MO.

Ronald R. Morrison

Ronald R. Morrison, age 56 of Kahoka, MO, passed away Monday, April 24, 2017 in LaBelle Manor, LaBelle, MO, where he had been a patient since April 20.

Ronnie was born July 17, 1960 in Quincy, IL, one of nine children born to Raymond Cecil and Helen M. Felker Morrison.

Survivors include one brother, Larry (Sharon) Morrison of Peaksville, MO; three sisters, Linda (Dan) Riley of Jadwin, MO, Sandy Darnell of Willard, MO, and Deborah Brammer of Wayland, MO; sisters-in-law, Diann Morrison and Carol Morrison, both of Kahoka, MO; as well as several nieces and nephews and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Charles, Robert, and Michael Morrison; one sister, Patricia LaMaster; sister-in-law, Pat Morrison; and, brothers-in-law, Roger Darnell and Mark Brammer.

Ronnie attended Clark County R-1 School District. He was previously employed by Trump Trucks and in addition was a self employed mechanic and carpenter.

Ronnie loved being out amongst nature. He enjoyed fishing, collecting arrowheads and being outdoors camping in the woods or near the water. He was content with what he had and being with his family.

Memorial services were held Thursday, April 27, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Wilson Funeral Home with Pastor Ray Gilbert officiating and Mr. Matt Gutting, eulogist. Additional eulogy was given by Linda Riley.

Special music was “Here For a Good Time” and “You’ll Be There”.

Visitation was held on Thursday from 10 a.m. until time of services.

Memorials in lieu of flowers made be made to and left at Wilson Funeral Home.

Lois Jean Curtis Evermon

Lois Jean Curtis Evermon, 66 of Wyaconda, MO went home to Heaven to be with Jesus on Thursday, April 27, 2017.

Lois was born March 26, 1951 in Keokuk, IA the daughter of Uhl Otto and Martha Elizabeth Baskett Curtis. On July 13, 1991 she was united in marriage to Vernon Evermon in St. Francisville, MO. He survives.

Other survivors include one daughter, Brenda Witte (Kenneth) of Rock Island, IL, three grandchildren, Keri, Jeremy and Andrew (Jessica) Witte, five great-grandchildren, one sister, Geraldine “Gerri” Sackfield of Cedar Rapids, IA, one brother, John Curtis (Marilyn) of Keokuk, IA, three sisters-in-law, Madilyn Curtis (Robert) of Davenport, IA, Dorothy Conover (Dean) of Canton, MO and Barb Beaird (Alan) of Wyaconda, MO and several nieces and nephews.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents, step-father, Herbert Cale, father and mother-in-law, one grandson, three brothers, two sisters, two brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law.

Lois had been employed at Sheller Globe in Keokuk for thirty-three years until her retirement.

She attended Anchor of Hope Church in Keokuk, IA.

Lois enjoyed singing, dancing, watching old western shows and shooting pool. She also enjoyed spending time outdoors trap shooting, riding Harley Davidson motorcycles and archery. Most of all, Lois loved spending time with her family and spoiling her four legged companions, Lucy, Sandy and Mabel.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday at the Anchor of Hope Church 1628 Concert Street in Keokuk, IA with Pastors John and Marilyn Curtis officiating.

A gathering of remembrance will be held from 6-8 p.m., Tuesday at the Vigen Memorial Home in Kahoka, MO with the family meeting with friends at that time.

Memorials may be made to the Hospice of Northeast Missouri.

Brenda J. Sturm

Brenda J. Sturm, 67, of Ainsworth, Iowa died Thursday, April 27, 2017 at her daughter’s home in Keosauqua, Iowa.

She was born July 4, 1949, the daughter of Robert and Maude Vickers Morrison in St. Louis, Missouri. On November 11, 1966 she was united in marriage to John “Jack” Sturm in Kahoka, Missouri. He preceded her in death on February 25, 2011. She was a loving wife to Jack for 44 years.

She is survived by two daughters; Teri Bunnell and her husband Andrew of Keosauqua, Iowa and Angie Lasek and her husband Dallus of Ainsworth, Iowa, one son Robert Sturm and his wife Jamie of Washington, Iowa, thirteen grandchildren; Colten Sturm, Erica Sturm, Lakin Sturm-Yates, Jackilynn Bunnell, Andrew Bunnell, Jr, Michael Bunnell, Noah Bunnell, Cory Bunnell, Elijah Bunnell, Abigail Bunnell, Trenton Lasek, Trey Lasek, And Zackary Lasek, fifteen great grandchildren, a brother, Galen Gibb of Arkansas and a sister; Shelia Holtkamp of St. Charles, MO, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband she was also preceded in death by her parents, two sons Tony and Eric Sturm, and a grandson Trevor Lasek and a sister, Linda Newton.

Brenda worked at Sheller Globe in Keokuk and Iowa City. She was also employed with the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics as a unit clerk.
She attended the Salem Church of God Church in Ainsworth.

She enjoyed painting and shopping, always looking for a good deal. Most of all she loved her dog Scooter and spending time with her many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 1, 2017 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Kahoka with Pastor Andrew Bunnell officiating. Burial will be in the Kahoka Cemetery.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services Monday from 1 – 2 p.m. at the funeral home with family meeting with friends at that time.

LARRY BARNES

Larry Eugene Barnes, age 65 of Edina, Missouri, passed away Sunday, April 30, 2017, in Columbia, Missouri.  He was born June 10, 1951, in Edina, Missouri, the son of Claude Franklin and Selma Faye Lancaster Barnes.

He was united in marriage to Rebecca Helen (Becki) Parton on February 20, 1971, in Edina, Missouri, and she preceded him in death on June 22, 1998.   Larry was also preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Gerald, Claude Jr. and Richard Barnes, and one sister Carol Jean Purdin.

Surviving are two children, Bradley (Kristin) Barnes of Columbia, Missouri, and Jennifer Nicole (Julian) Navarro of Columbia, Missouri; four grandchildren, Riley Barnes, Braxton McCurren, Natalia Perry and Penelope Navarro, three sisters Donna Patterson of Kirksville, Missouri; Sandra Hoskins of Hurdland, Missouri, Kay Cassady of Kirksville, Missouri, three brothers, Derrel Barnes of Kirksville, Missouri, Harold (Linda) Barnes, Ronnie (Janna) Barnes of Kirksville, Missouri; brothers and sisters-in-law Stanley Purdin of Hurdland, Missouri, Randy (Linda) Parton of Edina, Missouri, Bobby (Debbie) Parton of Beacon, Iowa, Roger (Dianne) Parton of Edina, Missouri; and several nieces and nephews.

Larry graduated from Knox County High School in 1969.  He was employed for over fifteen years with Marbles Ready Mix and for twenty plus years as Superintendent at Knox County Road and Bridge.  Larry was a member of Greensburg Masonic Lodge # 414 A.F. & A.M.  He loved horse-back riding, deer hunting and spending time with his family.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday, May 5, 2017, in the Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home in Edina, Missouri.  Musical selections:  Daddy’s Hands, Long Black Train and Swing Low Sweet Chariot. Burial will be in Park View Memorial Gardens in Kirksville, Missouri, with Tony Marble, Kevin Holdren, Kirk Watson, Tim Couch, Jason Violet and John McCurren as casket bearers and Terry Marble, Jim Gibbons, Derek Baker and Jim Parrish as honorary bearers.

Visitation will be held Thursday, May 4, 2017, after 4 p.m. with family receiving friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home in Edina, MO.

Raymond “Richard” Glasgow

Raymond “Richard” Glasgow, 84, of Eldon, Iowa died Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at the Ottumwa Regional Health Center in Ottumwa, Iowa.

He was born January 25, 1933 the son of Raymond and Beulah Kitson Glasgow in Wyaconda, Missouri. After his parents divorced he was raised by his father and step mother Mary Louise Glasgow. Richard was first united in marriage to Beatrice Norton. They later divorced. He then married Mary Lou Davis. She preceded him in death. He then married Ruth Hepker. She survives.

He is also survived by a daughter; Caroline Glasgow, a son; Vernon Glasgow both of Kansas, four step daughters; Paula Hobb of North Carolina, Cheryl Hepker of Oklahoma, Rose Troxel of Iowa, and Clarissa Palm of Iowa, six grandchildren, a sister; Margaret (Gerald) Elder of Kahoka, two half-brothers; Donald (Kay) Glasgow of Montrose, and Harold Kitson of Missouri, three half-sisters; Nora Ludwig, Nina Doran and Nona (Mike) Genck of Canton, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Glasgow, mother, Beulah Glasgow Kitson, step-mother, Mary Louise Glasgow, step-father, Perry Kitson, son in infancy, Edward Glasgow, step-son, Clifford Hepker, brother, Wilber Glasgow, and his sister, Darlene Glasgow Elder.

Richard was a farmhand for Selway Farms before enlisting into the Army. He proudly served his country in the United States Army as a medic from 1953 – 1955.

Mary Lou and Richard enjoying traveling to Texas in the winter in their motor home. He also enjoyed camping and having picnics.

Graveside services with military rites were held 1 p.m. Saturday at the Ballard Cemetery in rural Kahoka with Pastor Orlie Yoder officiating.

There was no visitation.

Memorials may be made to the Ballard Cemetery.

Acknowledgement of Military Service

The members of the United States Army, American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars hereby acknowledge that Comrade Raymond Richard Glasgow served our country for two years on active duty in the
United States Army during the Korean War.

He served as a Chief Dental Technician with the 5022nd Army Service Unit, United States Army Dental Unit at Fort Carson, Colorado. He attained the rank of Private First Class (E-3).

He was awarded and authorized to wear the following decorations:
National Defense Service Medal
Army Good Conduct Medal

He enlisted 4 March 1953 and received an honorable discharge 3 March 1955 from active duty and returned to Williamstown, Missouri.

He continued to serve in the United State Army Reserves.

The caissons have been muffled and the flag lowered for our comrade,
who joined the staff of the Supreme Commander 3 May 2017.

At his final post we wish him fair skies and smooth pathways.

RAYMOND PETTIT

Raymond E. Pettit, born June 1, 1932, to Paul Pettit and Mildred Knapp Pettit of Edina Missouri, passed away on May 5, 2017.

After graduating from St. Joseph High School in Edina, Missouri, Raymond served four years in the USAF.  Upon discharge, he attended UNM and graduated in 1958.  It was there Raymond met and married Carol Gladys Pompeo.   Raymond had a 40 year career as a Real Estate Broker and General Contractor, professional doughnut connoisseur and coffee enthusiast.  He built many buildings and offices around Albuquerque including the gym at Holy Ghost School. He and his brother, Bill surveyed and owned South Mountain and Hopewell Lake.  He was known for the love of his family, never missing a ball game or any important event for any of his children.

He is survived by his wife Carol of 60 years; his daughter, Shawn Marie Campbell and husband, Michael; sons, Paul and Phil and daughter, Elizabeth Baldwin and husband, Robert.  He also leaves behind nine cherished grandchildren; three great grandchildren; his brother, Joseph and wife, Phyllis; sister, Elizabeth O’Connell and husband, Lawrence; brother-in-law, Lee Pompeo; sisters-in-law, Laura Pompeo and Margaret Pompeo; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by infant son, James Michael; parents, Paul and Mildred Pettit; brother, William; and sister, Mary Jo.

Holy Rosary will be held on Friday, May 12, 2017, 10:30 a.m. followed by Mass at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, 833 Arizona SE.   Interment will take place at Sunset Memorial, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.


Ricky Joe Hines

Rick Hines, age 67, of La Plata, MO, joined his Lord and Savior on May 2, 2017. Rick was born February 17, 1950, in Kirksville, MO, to William F. and Evelyn C. Rector Hines.

He is survived by his sons, Wyeth and Spencer Hines; his mother, Evelyn Weber; his sister and brother-in-law, Kristy and Dave Haskin; daughters-in-law, Nikomi and Nikki Hines; his grandchildren Hannah, Grant, and Brooklyn; and aunts, an uncle and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, step-father, and an infant brother.

Rick graduated from Williamstown High School in 1968 and the University of Missouri in 1972 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. Rick began his career at KIRX Radio Station in Kirksville and then moved across town to the Kirksville Daily Express. He had been employed with Pro-Tech Company for 17 years when he passed away.

He taught his kids to love sports, especially baseball. He coached both of his sons’ baseball teams in little league.

Rick was a devoted family man, which gave him immense joy in his life. He taught his kids to love hard, work, be competitive, and instilled Christian values in them. Later in life, he enjoyed rocking his grandchildren and sharing stories with them. He loved to be a part of the Church of the Nazarene and was heavily involved in it.

At work and with his family, Rick’s unique infectious laugh rang clear across any room for all to hear. Throughout his illness, he never lost his sense of humor. He was an honest, humble, dignified, and cheerful man. For all these qualities, he will be greatly missed.

Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm on Monday, May 8, at Travis Funeral Chapel, 125 S. Church St., La Plata, MO. Casual attire is requested. To honor Rick, please wear your favorite St. Louis Cardinals paraphernalia.

A celebration of Rick’s life will be conducted at 10:00 am on Tuesday, May 9, at Church of the Nazarene, 2302 N. Lincoln St., Kirksville, MO with a luncheon to follow. The interment will occur at 3:00 pm on May 9, at Providence Cemetery in Williamstown, MO. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Church of the Nazarene in Kirksville.

Frances Hellwig

Frances Hellwig, 92, of Farmington, Iowa, passed away at 3:20 a.m. Sunday May 14, 2017 at the Donnellson Health Center.

Born January 7, 1925 in Loganville, Georgia, the daughter of John M. and Lottie B. Hammond Atkinson.  On December 16, 1944 at Loganville, Georgia she married Howard A. Hellwig.  He preceded her in death on June 1, 1997.

Survivors include one daughter: Eileen Brotherton of Wayland, Missouri, two sons: David (Sandy) Hellwig of Bonaparte, Iowa and H. Michael (Dianne) Hellwig of Paint Lick, Kentucky.  Five grandchildren: Lloyd (Julie) Brotherton, Carrie (Craig) Jordan, Rebecca (Matthew) VanZee, Jacob (Becky) Hellwig and Amanda Hellwig. Thirteen great-grandchildren: Daniel (Samantha), Christopher, Gabriel, and Isabelle Brotherton; Brianna Cochenour; Garrett, Annaliese and Alexander VanZee; Dustin Jordan; Natalie, Matthew, Michael, and Nicholas Hellwig.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother, one sister and two nephews.

Frances was a member of the Farmington United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, The Garden Club and Quilt Club and the Farmington American Legion Auxiliary.  She enjoyed quilting, flowers and watching birds.

Friends may call after 1:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Schmitz Funeral Home in Farmington with the family meeting friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 19, 2017 at the Farmington United Methodist Church with Pastor Michael Elrod officiating. Burial will be in the Thompson Cemetery near Bonaparte.

Memorials may be made to the Farmington United Methodist Church or the Farmington EMT’s.

Darlene L. Humes

Darlene L. Humes, age 84, of Wyaconda, MO, died Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at her home, surrounded by her family.

Darlene was born January 22, 1933 at her parent’s home in Wyaconda, a daughter of Martin C. and Wilma Clough Hines.

On February 27, 1953, she was united in marriage to Alfred L. Humes in Queen City, MO. He preceded her in death on January 7, 2006.

Survivors include four children: Sheila L. Humes, Mark E. (Candice) Humes, Linda S. (Stephen) Sherrill, and William L. (Lois) Humes, all of Wyaconda; three grandchildren: Jessica Darlene (Kenneth) Lee of Weatherby, MO, David (Melissa) Sherrill of Kahoka, and Anthony Sherrill of Wyaconda; three step-grandchildren: Christopher (Debbie) Hull of Hannibal, Kenneth (Michella) Hull of Memphis, and Casey (Holly) Hull of Leawood, KS; four grandchildren: Dominic and Avery Lee and Maverick and Micheal Sherrill; eight step-great grandchildren: Havon and Adalyn Lay, Michaela, Elijah, Jacob, Justin, Addison, and Maddox Hull; a sister, Geraldene Grogan of Keokuk; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Evelyn Weber of Clinton, MO, Ernest L. "Doc" (Louise) Humes of Wyaconda, James Humes of Burlington, IA, Patricia Varnold of Moberly, Dora (Don) Fogle of Memphis, Mary and Bob Fleer of Quincy, IL, Joann Humes of Macon and Lois Humes of Wyaconda; as well as nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a granddaughter, Mindy Humes; a sister, Willa Kearns; a brother, Bill Hines; brothers-in-law, Gerard Grogan, Donald Kearns, LaVerne Humes, A. J. Humes, and Robert Varnold.

Darlene was a 1951 graduate of Wyaconda High School and of Kirksville College of Cosmetology.

She owned Dar’s House of Beauty in Wyaconda, which her husband built for her in 1968. It was located next door to her dad’s business, Hines Barber Shop. She sold her business in 1973. Later she began working as a bookkeeper for the NEMO Library Board. Darlene was an elk producer alongside her husband, Alfred, and was very involved with getting elk domesticated in the State of Missouri.

Darlene was a member of the Wyaconda Christian Church and Charter member of the Wyaconda Red Hatters. She was a farmer’s wife and chores were part of her daily life. She loved to crochet and was a wonderful cook. She took pride in her appearance and was always ready to go at a moment’s notice. She made sure her work was done before lunch so she could watch her favorite Soap Opera, "As The World Turns".  Darlene was a loving mother and grandmother and as her great granddaughter said "she gave good hugs".

Funeral services were Saturday, May 13, 2017 at 10 a.m. at Wilson Funeral Home in Kahoka with Pastor Paul Harvey officiating. Burial will follow in the Wyaconda Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to Wyaconda Firefighter’s Assn. or Hospice of Northeast Missouri.

Arza Eugene Shultz

Arza Eugene Shultz, age 84, of Kahoka, Missouri, died on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at the Donnellson Care Center in Donnellson, Iowa.

Arza was born July 4, 1932, near Greensburg, Missouri, a son of William and Della May (Robinson) Shultz.

He was married to Mary Williams Townsend of Greensboro, Missouri at the Bible Grove Christian Church in Bible Grove, who survives.

Additional survivors include his children: Henry (Becky) Shultz of Centralia, MO, John Shultz of Newton, IA, Linda (LeRoy) Thornburg of Bonaparte, IA and Allen (Ruby) Shultz of Bondurant, IA; and an honorary daughter-in-law, Nancy Shultz of Donnellson, IA; sixteen grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Laura Cline of Lockridge, IA, Helen Rippey of Fairfield, IA, Wanda Williams of Texas and Louise Shultz of Fort Madison, IA, Joe Williams of Tucson, AZ and Keith "Shorty" and Judy Williams of Birmingham, IA; as well as nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Harry, William and Robert Shultz; and two sisters.

Arza graduated from Frog School near Baring, MO. He served in the U. S. Army from January of 1953 to December 1955 in Alaska as a Ski Instructor and then remained in the Army Reserve for twelve years. He received numerous medals. He was selected to go on the Honor Flight in Washington on May 22, 2014.

Arza was a former employee of Foote Mineral in Keokuk for 18 years, an employee of Farm and Home in Keokuk, and of the Clark County R-1 School District for 22 years. He was a member of the Kahoka Fire Department for 18 years, Revere School Board for 12 years and the former Revere Community Church Board for 35 years. He served as a leader for Happy Hurricane 4-H Club for 35 years. Arza was the 4-H Sheep Barn Superintendent for the Clark County Fair for 35 years. He also sheared sheep for 35 years. He was a Tran Wagon Driver at the Missouri State Fair for several years. His family with their registered herd began showing sheep in June and traveled from fair to fair through the summer, always attending the Missouri State Fair and Iowa State Fair. They were well known throughout the state and beyond. He was a faithful member of the Peaksville Christian Church before his health began to fail.

Needless to say, Arza was a busy man who loved farming, his sheep and the time spent with his children growing up and working together day in and out to take care of their herd. After he and Mary moved to Kahoka, he was a familiar figure out walking enjoying the outside where he had spent so much time. He loved being with his children and grandchildren and snuggling each new born baby.

Funeral services for Arza Shultz were held Thursday, May 18, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Wilson Funeral Home with Rev. Goldie Laymon officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at the Sunnyside Cemetery in Milton, IA.

Memorials are suggested to the Clark Co. Jr. Livestock Committee (for sheep barn).

Candy Murray Phillips, age 63, of LaPlata, Missouri, passed away at her residence rural LaPlata, Missouri.  She was born Kirksville, MO on December 3, 1953, the daughter of Jim Guy and Doris Elaine Waibel Murray.  Candy was united in marriage to Tom Phillips on February 17, 1990 in Novelty, Missouri.

Surviving are her husband Tom Phillips of LaPlata, Missouri, her mother Doris Elaine Murray of Novelty, Missouri, two brothers and one sister, Mike (Carla) Murray of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Matt (Lori) Murray of Novelty, Missouri, Dianna (Willard) Otto of Leonard, Missouri, nieces and nephews, Tyler (Shannon), Nolan and Whitney Otto, Ben and Jonathan Murray, and Alaina (Chris) Niedbalski, aunts and uncles, Wynona (Brian) Banks of Edina, Missouri, Garland Waibel of Mystic, Iowa and Rita Waibel of Edina, Missouri, several cousins and her special cats Howler and Boots.  Candy was preceded in death by her father and her father and mother-in-law.

Candy graduated from Knox County High School in 1971.  She attended Northeast Missouri State University (Truman State University) several years.  Candy was employed at Peavler’s Drug Store in Novelty, Missouri, while she was in school.  She later managed Ayerco in Kirksville several years, managed LaPlata Golf Shop and owned and operated Shady Rest Sports Shop in LaPlata, Missouri for several years.  She was currently employed as an Administrative Assistant at A.T. Still in Kirksville, Missouri.    Candy was a member of the Novelty Christian Church.  She enjoyed St. Louis Cardinals Baseball, watching her nieces and nephews play sports, her cats and dogs and spending time with her family.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday, May 22, 2107, in the Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home in Edina, Missouri.  Reverend Paul Milliken will officiate for the services.  Burial will be in Locust Hill Cemetery with Mike Spencer, Greg Love, Neal Helton, Tyler Otto, Nolan Otto and Roger Waibel as casket bearers and Alaina and Chris Niedbalski, Shannon Otto, Ben Murray, Jonathan Murray, Whitney Otto, Mike and Carla Murray, and Matt and Lori Murray will be honorary bearers.

Musical selections will be “Go Rest High On That Mountain” and “I’ll Fly Away”.

Visitation will be held Sunday, May 21, 2017, after 4 p.m. with family receiving friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home in Edina, Missouri.

Mr. Paul Kent Legg, age 62, of La Grange, Missouri, passed away Friday, May 19, 2017 at 11:59 p.m. at his residence in La Grange.

Born April 19, 1955, in Quincy, Illinois, Paul was a son of June Eugene and Nannie Margaret Shuman Legg. He married Sharon Kay Bell Crossett on December 13, 2015 in La Grange, Missouri.  She survives.

Paul was an avid outdoorsman and loved to hunt, fish, trap shoot and team rope. He really enjoyed the country. He was a horseman, he liked to spend time in the garden and enjoyed his dogs. He worked at La Grange Foundry from 1977 until its closing, was a graduate of Canton High School. Paul was a member of the Twelve Point Gun Club and was of the Catholic Faith.

Survivors include his wife Sharon of La Grange; three sons, Jason (Paige) Legg of Lewistown, Missouri, and CL (Lisa) Legg of Bowling Green, Missouri, and John Crossett of La Grange; four daughters, Aimee (Mark) DeClue of Bethel, Missouri, Jessica (Harley) Daugherty of La Grange, Teena (Jasen) Cunningham of La Grange and Liz Shepherd of Quincy, Illinois; two brothers, Lennis Legg of Canton, Missouri, Brad Legg of Kansas City, Missouri; a sister, Nancy Carr of Puerto Rico; grandsons, Lane Nelson and Tell Legg of Lewistown, Colton and Logan Daugherty of La Grange, Casey DeClue of Bethel, Missouri, Dylan DeClue of Hannibal, Steven Crossett of Quincy, Alex Bugg of Quincy, Jasen Cunningham Jr. of La Grange and Logan Shepherd of Quincy; Granddaughters, Karlie DeClue of Bethel, Emily Legg of La Grange, Sarah McCutchan of Quincy, Dariane DeClue of Bowling Green, Taylor Legg of La Grange, Sheena Crossett of La Grange, Tori Sullivan of Colorado Springs, CO and Peyton Shepherd of Quincy; great grandchildren, Candice Crossett and Bane Meyer both of La Grange and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 25, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at the Davis Funeral Home in La Grange with Fr. Christopher Aubuchon officiating and music will be “Remember When” (Alan Jackson) and “Daddy’s Hands”.

Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery, St. Patrick, Missouri with Kent Munzlinger, Marvin Hoffman, Rodney Cunningham, Troy Boyer, Johnnie Kraft and Clay Doan as pallbearers, and  Joe Schutte, Paul Guilfoyle and Kent Spindler as honorary pallbearers.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 24, 2017 from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the Davis Funeral Home in La Grange.

The family suggests memorials be made to the Twelve Point Gun Club in care of Davis Funeral Home, La Grange, MO.

 

PAUL “JD” SHARP

Paul "JD" Dean Sharp, 58, of Kirksville, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at Boone Hospital Center in Columbia, Missouri, with his family by his side.

JD was born the son of Paul Edward and Cecilia Sharp on November 12, 1958 in Edina, Missouri, and grew up on the family farm in Edina with his two sisters, Brenda and Frances.

JD enjoyed being out on the road seeing places across America. When he was home he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and loved being around his grandkids.

JD is survived by his wife, Tammy Sharp of Kirksville, Missouri; his daughter, Angie Miller and husband Duane of Columbia, Missouri; his sons, Mike Sharp of Kirksville, Missouri, and Joe Sharp and wife, Jennifer of Kirksville, Missouri; his sister, Frances Holman and husband, Jerry of Edina, Missouri; and two grandchildren, Brett and Hannah Miller.  He is also survived by nieces, nephews, and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Savanna Jo Sharp, and one sister, Brenda Burkhardt.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 27, 2017 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Travis-Noe Funeral Home in Kirksville.

LETA EWING

Leta Belle Norton Ewing age 91, of Rutledge, Missouri, passed away at Kirksville Manor Care on May 20, 2017, with her family by her side.  She was a lifelong resident of the Rutledge area and enjoyed living in her home until failing health required her to move to the nursing home in July, 2015.

Zella and Tom Norton, sister, Elsie and brother, Glen welcomed Leta into their family near Rutledge on January 25, 1926.  She attended Millport Elementary School and one year of high school in Rutledge.  She married Kenneth Eugene Ewing on January 18, 1948, and moved to a farm three miles southeast of Rutledge, where she was a housewife, mother and homemaker until they retired from farming in 1977 and moved to ‘town’.  Leta enjoyed keeping house, cooking and raising a large garden; her specialties were light rolls, cucumber pickles, fried potatoes and meat loaf, which her children and grandchildren enjoyed.  Meeting friends and having lunch at the store, as well as getting together with friends and neighbors and playing cards, were her favorite pastimes.  Leta will be greatly missed by everyone.

Leta was proceeded in death by her parents, sister, and brother; an infant son, Glen Edward, in July, 1951; husband, Kenneth Eugene, in October, 1978; and granddaughter, Linda Sue Ewing, in February, 2000.

Survivors include four children and their spouses:  Stanley and Victoria Ewing of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Harold Ewing and Kevin Wilcoxon of Indio, California; Larry and Jeanie Ewing of Kirksville, Missouri; and Phyllis and Travis Miller of Kirksville, Missouri.

Also surviving are seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren:  Michelle Ewing and Olivia Combs of La Plata, Missouri; Brian and Modeste Ewing, Madie and Cailin of Macon, Missouri; Carrie and Shawn Durant, John and Toby of Centralia, Missouri; John and Brittany Ewing of St. Charles, Missouri; Jean and Troy Davis, Landon, Andy, Ethan and Owen of Columbia, Missouri; and Kaitlyn Miller and Chase Miller of Kirksville, Missouri.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 25, 2017, from 6 to 8 pm at the Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home in Edina, Missouri.

Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Friday, May 26, 2017, at the Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home in Edina, with the Reverend Mike Wilson officiating.   Burial will be in the Pauline Cemetery at Rutledge with the grandsons and great grandsons:  Brian Ewing, John Ewing, Shawn Durant, Troy Davis, Chase Miller, John Durant, Toby Durant, and Cailin Ewing as pallbearers and Kaitlyn Miller, Madie Ewing, Olivia Combs, Landon, Andy, Ethan and Owen Davisas honorary pallbearers.

Music will be provided by Brent Karhoff, soloist and Nancy Reardon, organist.  Selections will be Just A Closer Walk With Thee and Beyond The Sunset.

Donald Eugene Price, 86, of Kahoka, MO, died Sunday, April 30, 2017 at the Soldiers and Sailors Home in Quincy, IL.

He was born on June 21, 1930 in Scotland County, MO, the son of Owen Powell and Thelma “Beryl” Heath Price. He graduated from Wyaconda High School in Wyaconda, MO. On October 3, 1958, Donald was united in marriage to Dolores “Dee” Fedrick in Hamilton, IL. She preceded him in death on December 8, 2016.

Donald was a veteran of the United States Navy and proudly served his country during the Korean War.

Donald had been employed at Keokuk Steel Castings for forty-five years, retiring in 1998.

He was a member of the Wyaconda Baptist Church, the American Legion and VFW, the Moose Lodge and Eagles Club.

He enjoyed being outdoors, gardening, fishing and camping. He also enjoyed traveling and playing cards.

Donald is survived by two sons, C. Wayne Price (Jackie) of Quincy, IL, Stephen E. Price (Teresa) of Blue Springs, MO, five grandchildren, Tyler Price of Blue Springs, MO, Sabrina Sparks (Donny) of Maywood, MO, Sarah Schlenker (Shawn) and Pamela Price all of Des Moines, IA and Timothy Price (Elizabeth) of Independence, MO, three great-granddaughters, Kelsea Price (Sam) of Des Moines, IA, Jennifer Sparks of Quincy, IL and Nicole Sparks of Maywood, MO, one great-grandson, Payton Price of Blue Springs, MO, two great-great-grandsons, Nathaniel Schlenker and Bodhi Ripley both of Des Moines, IA, one brother, Charles Price of Wyaconda, MO, and two nieces, Melinda Gifford of Wyaconda, MO and Kimberly Carson (Glenn) of Fulton, MO.

Besides his wife, he was also preceded in death by his parents, one son, Donnie Ray Price, one daughter-in-law, Linda Price, one sister, Isabel Peterson and one nephew, Micheal Price.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 11 am – 1 pm on May 29, 2017 at the Madison Park Christian Church Commons Building, 4700 Broadway, Quincy, IL. Burial will be in Bear Creek Cemetery in Wyaconda, MO.

David Leroy Reece Hornung, 61 of Keokuk died Friday, May 19, 2017 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, IA.

He was born on November 30, 1955 in Keokuk the son of Gilbert and Joan Briley Spurgeon Hornung. Following his father’s death he was raised by his mother and step-father, Bill Reece. He was first united in marriage to Delores Martinez. They divorced. He later entered a relationship with Rebecca Egley, who he had been with for the next nineteen years. She survives.

Other survivors include one daughter, Jessica Raleigh of Quincy, IL, two grandchildren, Dominic and Olivia, 3 step-daughters, Tara Brewer of Quincy, IL, Tisha Prenger of New Hampshire, and Tosha Kensett of Cedar Rapids, IA, one step-son, Chet Jones of Oelwein, IA, eight step-grandchildren, Becka Steinkuehler, Gavin Jones, Marcus West, Trish Brooks, Heather Baker, Ryan Brewer and Jacqueline Brewer, four step-great-grandchildren, one sister, Dixie Kirchner (Clinton) of Kahoka, MO, two brothers, Doug Reece (Barbara) of Kahoka, MO and William Reece (Dawna) of Ft. Madison, IA, one half-brother, Mike Hornung of Kahoka, MO and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, step-father, Bill Reece, brother, Kirk Reece and his ex-wife.

David was a veteran of the United States Army and proudly served his country.

David graduated from Clark County High School in Kahoka, MO with the Class of 1973.

He had been employed by Shannon’s Drywall until he became disabled.
David was an avid Chicago Bears fan. He had a great love for country music, especially Merle Haggard and George Jones. He was very crafty and a very talented woodworker. He made birdhouses, grandfather clocks and wood shelves to give away to his family and friends. He could draw anything from abstract to folk art. David enjoyed working crossword puzzles and watching his favorite game show, Jeopardy on television. David adored his dog, Haley, who was always by his side.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Doris Geraldine Eyler Doss, 92, of Baring, Missouri, passed away Thursday, May 25, 2017, at the Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville, Missouri.

Doris was born on December 22, 1924, in rural Knox County, Missouri, and on October 7, 1945 in Edina, Missouri, she married Harvey Doss and to this union nine children were born.

She attended the Dailing Rural School before graduating from the Baring High School in the Class of 1942.

Doris was an active part of the Baring Community and was a member of the Baring Community Church and attended the Edina Christian Church in later years. She enjoyed quilting, gardening, cooking and her birds, but most of all she loved spending time with her kids, grandchildren, great grandchildren and her great great grandkids.

Doris is survived  by eight sons and daughters, Shirley and Leroy Rohs of Independence, Missouri, Virgil Doss of Baring, Missouri, David and Mary Ann Doss of Clifton Hill, Missouri, Jo Ellen Doss of Baring, Missouri, Gary and Mary Jo Doss of Dallas City, Illinois, Roger and Pam Doss of Grandview, Missouri, Kay and Bud Jones of Edwardsville, Kansas and Wendell and Jan Doss of Baring, Missouri; twenty-four grandchildren; thirty great grandchildren and two step great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Doss on November 7, 1993; a son J.T. Doss on November 27, 2014; three daughters-in-law, Sharon Doss on February 22, 1998, Norma Doss on February 26, 2011, and Kathy Doss on May 29, 2016; and a grandson, Christopher Adam Doss on August 11, 1997.

Funeral Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 28, 2017, at the Doss Funeral Home in Edina, Missouri.

Visitation will be after 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 27, 2017, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Doss Funeral Home in Edina, Missouri.

Private Family burial will be in the Park View Memorial Gardens in Kirksville, Missouri.

Pastor Dewayne Wellborn and Bud Jones (her son-in-law) will officiate and Honorary Bearers will be all of her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

CLAUDE “WALLY” WALTER CECIL

Claude “Wally” Walter Cecil, age 59, of Shelbyville, Missouri, passed away Friday, May 26, 2017, at the Salt River Community Care Center, in Shelbina, Missouri.

Wally was born May 21, 1958, in Quincy, Illinois, the son of Edward Lee and Mary Lou (Mesmer) Cecil.

He is survived by his mother, Mary Lou Cecil; aunts and uncles; and several cousins.

Wally was preceded in death by his father, Edward Lee Cecil; and one infant sister.

Wally was a member of the Mt. Zion Church, east of Shelbyville, Missouri. He enjoyed driving his four wheeler and spending time in the outdoors. He liked to hunt, especially deer hunting.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.
